How It Happened
SET 1 | The two teams were even to start, splitting the first eight points. The Gophers went on a 4-0 run after that, led by kills from Hanson and Myers combined with a block from Acevedo. Michigan would race back to tie it up at 10-10 following a trio of kills and an ace. An ace from Acevedo, kill from Taylor and a block from Kinney and Taylor helped Minnesota go up 15-13 into the media break. After that, Kinney put down two aces and Michigan had a bad set, putting the visitors up 18-13 and forcing a Michigan timeout. The Gophers would extend their lead to as many as seven at 22-15 following kills from Myers and Acevedo, leading to another UM timeout. The Wolverines would get no closer than six the rest of the way as Minnesota took frame one, 25-18. The 'U' hit .417 with four blocks, holding UM to .250 and no blocks.

SET 2 | Michigan started hot in the second set, scoring seven of the first 10 before Minnesota called a timeout. The Wolverines didn't slow down after the break, scoring the next four to go up 11-3. UM's lead got to as many as 11 at 19-8 after a 4-0 run midway through the set before Minnesota cut it back to 10. The Wolverines would score six of the next nine after that to take the second set, 25-12. After two sets, Michigan had 30 kills compared to 15 for the 'U', outhitting the visitors .333 to .125.

SET 3 | The Gophers started strong in set three, scoring five of the first seven. Michigan would answer with a 7-1 run to take a 9-6 lead, however, forcing a Minnesota timeout. The Wolverines kept the pressure going, scoring seven of the next 11 to go up 16-10, forcing Minnesota's last timeout of the set. UM refused to slow down, scoring nine of the next 13 after the timeout to win set three, 25-14. UM finished on a 16-7 run to win the frame and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
