Hanson led Minnesota with 18 kills
EVANSTON, Ill. --Â The No. 10 Minnesota volleyball team took down the Northwestern Wildcats in four sets on Sunday afternoon at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The set scores were 25-18, 25-22, 17-25, 26-24.
Julia Hanson led Minnesota with 18 kills while Stella Swenson went for 41 assists and 14 digs. McKenna Garr was back in the lineup at libero and notched 14 digs while Jordan Taylor went for six kills and eight blocks.
"Our last game on Wednesday, we knew that wasn't us and we had to respond," Hanson said. "This is a great Northwestern team and we did what we needed to do. We stuck to our assignments and played together today."
The Gophers (13-2, 3-1 Big Ten) outhit the Wildcats (11-5, 1-3 Big Ten) .290 to .217, led in blocks (11 to 4) and aces (6 to 5). The two teams tied in kills in kills (53 to 53) and digs (58 to 58).
Ayah Elnady led Northwestern with 14 kills and 10 digs while Isabella Bullington went for 14 kills. Four Wildcats had 10+ kills.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The match started back and forth, with the two teams splitting the first 12 points before an ace from Georgia Lee and a kill from Alex Acevedo put Minnesota up 8-6. A 4-0 run put Northwestern up 10-9 before three Gophers kills and a block from Gilk and Taylor made it 13-10, Minnesota. The 'U' led 15-13 heading into the media timeout. An ace from Acevedo and a block from Hanson and Taylor led to a 17-13 lead and a Northwestern timeout. The Wildcats tallied two straight after the break before two errors and a Myers kill made it 20-15, Minnesota, forcing NU into another timeout. The Wildcats would get no closer the rest of the way and the 'U' emerged with the set one win, 25-18. The Gophers hit .345 for the frame, getting four kills from Acevedo and three from Myers.
SET 2 | NU came out firing in the second set, scoring six of the first nine before Hanson bashed two kills in-a-row. The Wildcats would keep up their lead, going up three again, 11-8 before Hanson notched a kill on a back row attack. After going down 12-9, Minnesota notched four of the next five, getting a kill from Taylor and two from Hanson, to tie it at 13. NU would lead 15-13 at the media timeout after two more kills. Kills from Myers and Swenson tied the set up at 15 before Minnesota took its first lead of the frame at 17-16. Another kill from Myers on the slide made it 18-16 before NU went for two straight points to tie it again. An ace from Lee and two kills from Acevedo were Minnesota's response, putting the 'U' up 22-19 and forcing a Wildcats timeout. The Gophers kept up the pressure, going up 24-20 after two kills from Gilk, leading to NU's last timeout of the frame. Two NU kills made it 24-22, leading to a Minnesota timeout. A net violation led to the 'U' taking set two, 25-22.

NU scored four of the next five to tie it up at 6-6 before a block from Kinney and Taylor along with a kill from Taylor made it 9-6, Minnesota. NU called its first timeout of the frame at this point. After the timeout, NU responded by scoring eight of the next 11, going up 14-12 before Minnesota called one to talk it over. Northwestern kept up the pressure, scoring five of the next six after the timeout to go up 19-13. The Gophers would get no closer than five the rest of the way before falling 25-17.

After the break, NU tallied four of the next five, cutting the lead to 16-15 and forcing a Minnesota timeout. A kill and an ace from Gilk put Minnesota up 18-16 and led to an NU timeout. A Minnesota service error, hitting error and kill from NU helped put the home team up 19-18 before Hanson tied it back up with a kill. The Gophers would go up 21-19 after an NU error and a block from Myers, leading to NU's final timeout. The 'U' would go up 22-19 before a service error and an NU ace made it 22-21, forcing coach Cook into a timeout. The Gophers would go up 24-22 after a Kinney kill before NU tied it up at 24.
