EAST LANSING, Mich. - The University of Minnesota tennis team opened play Friday at the Spartan Invite at Michigan State University.

The Golden Gophers faced Xavier in doubles and Indiana in singles.

Minnesota's doubles teams went 1-2 against Xavier to open play at the Spartan Invite. Mia Liepert and Anlin Xie earned the lone win for the Gophers, defeating Emily Flowers and Natalie Smitek 6-3. Jeselle Ante and Sofia Pinto fell to Abby Nugent and Clara Owen 5-7, while Nora Knezevic and Arina Valitova dropped their match to Ella DeFord and Madeleine Rexroat 4-6.

The Golden Gophers went 3-3 in singles play against Indiana. Knezevic battled back for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Mansi Vadyala, while Liepert earned a hard-fought victory against Magdalena Swierczynska, 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 6-4. Pinto added a win after Nicole Sifuentes retired due to injury with Pinto leading 3-4. Valitova fell to Li Hsin Lin 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, Ante dropped her match to Elisabeth Dunac 2-6, 6-4, 6-0, and Xie came up short against Ameia Sorey 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

The Spartan Invite will continue tomorrow at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center, with doubles matches against Indiana and Michigan State beginning at 10 a.m., followed by singles against Xavier at 1 p.m.
