Tyson Tallies 29; Shorthanded Gophers Fall to Santa Clara

11/28/2025 11:18:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Cade Tyson scored a game-high 29 points, Isaac Asuma had 13 points and five assists, and Langston Reynolds added 12 points, but short-handed Minnesota (4-4) was unable to overcome red-hot shooting by Santa Clara (7-1) in an 86-75 loss in the third-place game of the Acrisure Invitational in Palm Desert, Calif.

The Gophers were down two starters, as both forward Robert Vaihola and guard Chansey Willis Jr. were out with injuries. The Broncos took advantage by making 31-of-57 (.544) field goals, including 16-of-31 (.516) three-pointers, while building a 31-point lead with 11:44 remaining. Minnesota played gutsy basketball down the stretch, outscoring the Broncos 35-15 over the final 10:25.

Tyson's 29-point game was one off his season-high of 30 in the season-opener, and it was his fifth game with 20+ points. He made 8-of-16 field goals and was 12-of-14 at the free throw line, while adding five rebounds and four assists. Asuma's 13-point outing included 3-of-7 from three-point range, and he added a team-best five assists, four rebounds, and a pair of steals. Reynolds started in place of Willis Jr., and he was 5-of-9 from the field, while Jaylen Crocker-Johnson finished with six points and six boards, Bobby Durkin had seven points, and Kai Shinholster added career-highs of six points and a team-high seven rebounds.

The Broncos were led by Christian Hammond, who scored 18 of his 20 points in the first half. Five other players reached double-figures for Santa Clara. As a team, Minnesota made 24-of-55 (.436) field goals, including 7-of-24 (.292) three-pointers, and 20-of-27 (.741) free throws. The Gophers had a 34-26 rebounding advantage, and a 17-9 edge in second-chance points due largely to 13 offensive rebounds.

Santa Clara opened the game with a 9-0 run before Asuma got the Gophers going with a three-pointer from the top of the key at the 17:24 mark. A pair of free throws by Tyson and a Durkin three-pointer that beat the shot clock pulled the Gophers within five at 13-8, but an 8-1 Santa Clara run put the Broncos up 21-9 at the second media timeout. The Broncos opened by making 9-of-13 (.692) field goals, including 2-of-3 from three-point range.

Four points from Reynolds and a Tyson layup trimmed the lead to 24-15 with 8:36 left in the half, but an 11-0 Broncos run extended the lead to 20 points, forcing Niko Medved to call timeout with 6:39 remaining. A 7-2 run with five points from Tyson cut it to 37-22, but the Broncos responded with a 5-0 run to stretch their lead back to 20. Red-hot Santa Clara, which wound up making 8-of-12 three-pointers in the first half, took a 51-27 lead to the locker room.

Tyson led the Gophers with 13 first-half points, going 7-of-9 at the free throw line. Minnesota made 8-of-23 (.348) field goals and was 9-of-12 at the line. Crocker-Johnson had four points and four rebounds for the Gophers, and Reynolds added four points. Hammond paced Santa Clara with 18 points. The Broncos made 18-of-29 (.621) field goals, including 8-of-12 from long-range, went 7-of-9 at the line, and held a 15-13 rebounding edge.

The teams traded baskets for the first four minutes of the second half until the Broncos used an 8-0 run to open a 63-33 lead. Minnesota kept fighting, with Tyson's three-point play highlighting a 5-0 run, and Tyson reached 20 points on a layup with 13:02 left. An 11-3 Gophers run over about two and a half minutes trimmed the deficit to 74-51, and Tyson scored nine-straight points during a 14-4 run to cut it to 81-65. Minnesota never stopped fighting, as it closed the game with another 10-3 run over the final 1:32, including back-to-back trifectas from Shinholster, to cut the final margin to 11 points.

Minnesota returns home to open its Big Ten schedule versus Indiana on Wednesday, Dec. 3. Tipoff at Williams Arena is set for 6:00 p.m. CST, and the game will be televised on Big Ten Network.
