Braun Hits 1,000 Points in 82-44 Win Over Alabama A&M

The Golden Gophers improve to 7-3 on the season and will face Wyoming on Sunday
MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota women's basketball team (7-3, 0-1 Big Ten) took down Alabama A&M (3-7, 0-0 SWAC) 82-44 on Wednesday evening at Williams Arena.
The Golden Gophers had four players score in double figures, led by Tori McKinney, who had 13 points, four assists and two steals. Makena Christian added 12 points off the bench and Grace Grocholski helped out with 11 points and six assists. Brylee Glenn contributed 11 points along with eight rebounds.
Mara Braun became the 29th Golden Gopher to reach 1,000 career points. She finished with eight points and sits at 1,002
The Minnesota offense was very productive from beyond the arc, making nine threes on 21 attempts. Christian was the most prolific shooter for the Gophers, draining four treys in the contest.
Minnesota's defense held Alabama A&M to only 34.6 percent shooting from the field, including 23.8 percent from beyond the arc.
How It Happened
After falling behind 2-0, Minnesota went on an 8-0 run with 8:43 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from McKinney, to take an 8-2 lead. The Gophers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 17-16 advantage. Minnesota capitalized on three Alabama A&M turnovers in the period, turning them into six points on the other end of the floor.
Minnesota built that first quarter lead to 31-23 before going on a 16-0 run starting at the 4:10 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Christian, to increase its lead to 47-23, a score that would hold until halftime. Minnesota was strong from deep in the period, knocking down six three-point shots to account for 18 of its 30 points.
Following intermission, Minnesota continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 57-32 before going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from McKinney, to expand its lead further to 64-32 with 1:05 to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Minnesota knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 17 total points.
Minnesota kept its lead intact before going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Kennedy Klick's layup, to grow the lead to 82-44 with 30 seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Minnesota took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 18 points in the paint.
