Gophers Roll Tommies to Wrap 2025

12/6/2025 4:46:00 PM | Women's Hockey

MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 3-ranked University of Minnesota women's hockey team closed out the 2025 portion of its schedule with a 4–1 win over St. Thomas, completing the series sweep on Saturday afternoon at Ridder Arena. Three Gophers recorded multi-point performances to lead the way.

Minnesota found its rhythm early, striking in the opening minutes of the contest. Sydney Morrow sent a stretch pass to Jamie Nelson, who carried the puck into the offensive zone before threading a feed to Madison Kaiser driving the low slot. Kaiser buried a wrist shot through the Tommies' goaltender for her fourth tally of the season.

The Gophers kept the pressure on, doubling their lead to 2–0 at the 5:45 mark of the first period. On a two-on-one rush, Nelli Laitinen and Abbey Murphy connected on a perfectly executed give-and-go, with Murphy finishing glove-side high for her 20th goal of the year.

Minnesota carried a 12–3 shots-on-goal advantage into the first intermission while successfully killing off a five-minute major.

The offense stayed hot into the second period, as the Gophers made it 3–0 just 5:08 into the frame. Morrow drove through the low slot, spun at the goal line, and fired a pass across the crease to Josefin Bouveng, who one-timed home her 10th of the season to extend her point streak to 17 games.

Minnesota added another at 11:15 of the second. On a two-on-one rush, Nelson fired a low shot that was initially stopped before following her rebound and tucking in her fifth goal of the year.

St. Thomas broke through midway through the third, scoring at 9:31 to cut the deficit to three, but the Gophers held strong the rest of the way to secure the win.

With the victory, Minnesota improves to 14-4-0 (10-4-0 WCHA), while St. Thomas drops to 8-12-0 (3-11-0 WCHA).

Quotable
"It was a great game, maybe one of the best we've played all year in all phases," said Head Coach Brad Frost. "Great discipline in our structure, we were up on our toes, and applying a ton of pressure right from the drop of the puck. Overall, it was 60 minutes of really good hockey and so we're really happy for our group."

Notable
- Abbey Murphy recorded her 26th career game-winning goal, securing the most in program history.
- Josefin Bouveng extended her points streak to 17 consecutive games.
- Murphy became the first WCHA player to score 20 goals this season.
- Sydney Morrow, Jamie Nelson, and Madison Kaiser all recorded their fourth multi-point games of the year.
- Gracie Graham, Morrow, and Bouveng each skated to a +3 rating.

Up Next
Minnesota enters the extended break with a 14-4-0 overall record (10-4-0 WCHA). The Gophers return to action Jan. 2–3 with a two-game nonconference series at Sacred Heart in Fairfield, Conn. Puck drop is set for 4:00 p.m. CT on Friday and 12:00 p.m. CT on Thursday.
