No. 2 Ohio State Takes Down Maroon & Gold on Saturday

2/1/2025 5:32:00 PM | Women's Hockey

MINNEAPOLIS - The third-ranked Golden Gopher women's hockey team drops to a 22-6-1 (16-5-1 WCHA) record after falling 7-3 to the second-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes at Ridder Arena on Saturday.

The series will end with each team going 1-1-0. Minnesota previously defeated Ohio State in last night's 3-1 contest.

The Gophers got on the board first as redshirt-junior Emma Conner scored her third goal of the season just under two minutes into the game, assisted by Audrey Wethington and Lauren O'Hara. The score remained 1-0 heading into first intermission, with the Buckeyes leading 14-10 in shots on goal.

The second period saw five goals scored between the two squads. Ohio State's Sloane Matthews recorded a hat trick during the period, scoring at the 1:13, 7:28, and 19:10 marks. It was the first hat trick allowed by the Gophers all season. Senior forward Peyton Hemp tallied two goals for Minnesota, marking her third multi-goal game of the season, with the first goal assisted by Ella Huber and Ava Lindsay, and the second goal going unassisted.

Ohio State's offense dominated the third period. The Buckeyes scored four unanswered goals, three of which were on the power play, throughout the final 20 minutes of the game.

A total of 21 penalties were called throughout the game, the most in a single Gopher game all season. Eleven penalties totaling 30 minutes were called on Minnesota, both season-highs, and ten penalties totaling 20 minutes were called on Ohio State.

Quotable:
"Good through one period and about eighteen minutes," said head coach Brad Frost. "Up 3-2, the puck hops on us a bit, [Ohio State gets] a mini breakaway off our stick and in to make it 3-3, and then get a power play [goal] towards the end of the period. We were still in good shape, but the third [period] obviously got away from us there. So we will flush it here and we'll get back to it this week, ready for another great opponent."

Notable:
- Peyton Hemp scored her 12th and 13th goals of the season, including her fifth power play goal of the season (tied for most on the team).
- Peyton Hemp scored her 54th and 55th career goals.
- The last time the Gophers allowed three power play goals was on Jan. 12, 2013 in a 6-3 win against North Dakota.
- The last time the Gophers allowed a hat trick was against Ohio State on Jan. 12, 2024.
- Ohio State out-shot Minnesota 42-33.
- This was only the fifth game all season in which the Gophers did not lead in SOG.
