Top-Ranked Badgers Hand Gophers 8-2 Loss on Saturday

MADISON, Wisc. - The No. 3-ranked University of Minnesota women's hockey team drops to a 22-7-1 (16-6-1 WCHA) record after falling 8-2 to No. 1 Wisconsin (28-1-2, 22-1-2 WCHA) on Saturday afternoon at LaBahn Arena.

Wisconsin opened up the scoring early with a Laila Edwards goal at the four-minute mark of the first period. The Badgers' Lacey Eden then capitalized on a breakaway less than a minute later, increasing the Wisconsin lead to two. Senior forward Ella Huber responded five minutes later, getting the Gophers on the board with her tenth goal of the season, assisted by Sydney Morrow and Chloe Primerano. With under four minutes to play until first intermission, the Badgers brought the lead back to two with a Marianne Picard goal. The score remained 3-1 as the opening period came to a close, with Wisconsin holding a 13-7 shot advantage.

The second and third periods were dominated by the Badger's top-ranked offensive attack, as Wisconsin tallied five additional goals and outshot the Gophers 25-13 throughout the final 40 minutes of the game. 

Junior defender Sydney Morrow scored her tenth goal of the season, assisted by Primerano and Huber, three minutes into the third period. Freshman goaltender Hannah Clark made 22 saves through the first two periods before junior goaltender Sophia Johnson went in net for the third. Johnson recorded the first eight saves of her career against the Badgers' final ten shots of the game.

- Ella Huber recorded the 47th goal and 127th point of her career.
- Ella Huber recorded her 13th multipoint game of the season, the second-most on the team.
- Sydney Morrow recorded the 70th and 71st points of her career.
- Sydney Morrow recorded her eighth multipoint game of the season.
- Chloe Primerano recorded her sixth multipoint game of the season.
- Sophia Johnson recorded the second game appearance and first eight saves of her career.
- Wisconsin out-shot Minnesota 38-20.
- Saturday marked the fifth game all season in which the Gophers did not lead in SOG.
- Saturday marked the first game since Dec. 4, 2016 in which the Gophers allowed eight goals.
