Gophers Head to Alabama for Three-Match Road Swing

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota tennis team hits the road this weekend for a trio of matches in Alabama, facing East Tennessee State, UAB, and Alabama.
The Gophers (6-2) open against East Tennessee State (2-3) on Saturday at 11 a.m. (CT) at the Alabama Tennis Stadium in Tuscaloosa. They then travel to Birmingham to take on UAB (4-4) at 3 p.m. (CT) at the Hoover Met Tennis Center.
Minnesota returns to Tuscaloosa on Sunday to face Alabama (3-2) at 10 a.m. (CT) at the Alabama Tennis Stadium.
The Competition
Minnesota will face East Tennessee State for the first time in program history on Saturday. The Buccaneers have played just three matches against current Big Ten members, facing Michigan State twice (2007, 2008) and Oregon once (2013).
ETSU enters the matchup with a 2-3 record, having won its last two matches against Appalachian State and Lipscomb.
Minnesota is 0-1 all-time against UAB, having lost their lone matchup 6-1 on March 20, 1996.
The Dragons enter the weekend with a 4-4 record, recording wins over Presbyterian, Alabama State, North Alabama and Belmont. UAB has not faced a Big Ten opponent since playing Indiana in 2020.
Minnesota will face Alabama for the first time in program history on Sunday. The Crimson Tide are currently 3-2 on the season with wins over Arizona State, Tulane and Georgia Tech. The Big Ten is currently 7-9 against teams from the SEC this spring season.
Alabama and ETSU will face off today at 2 p.m. before each team plays the Gophers on Saturday and Sunday.
The Season So Far
Minnesota opened its season in Florida on Jan. 18-19, defeating Middle Tennessee State 4-2 in its first match before falling to Florida Gulf Coast 4-2 and Florida Atlantic 4-0 on Jan. 19.
The Gophers bounced back on Feb. 1 in Ames, Iowa, with a 4-0 win over Air Force. The following day, they edged Iowa State 4-3, improving to 3-2 on the season.
Minnesota extended its winning streak this past weekend, sweeping Missouri, Colorado State and St. Thomas in its home opener, improving to 6-2 on the season
Mia Magic
Sophomore Mia Liepert has won five consecutive singles matches after dropping her season opener, marking the longest win streak of her career. The Bludenz, Austria, native excelled this past weekend, becoming the first player to finish her match in each of the team's three contests against Missouri, Colorado State, and St. Thomas.
Liepert has also competed in the No. 1 doubles spot this spring alongside partner Anali Kocevar, posting a 4-2 record. The duo has earned wins over MTSU, FGCU, Iowa State, and St. Thomas.
Anlin & Ante
Anlin Xie and Jeselle Ante have been standout players for the Maroon and Gold this season, each posting a 3-1 record in singles play. Both have earned 10 or more wins and are currently on three-match win streaks.
The duo also competed together in doubles this past weekend, going 2-0 with victories over Colorado State and St. Thomas.
