Gophers’ Comeback Falls Short as Huskies Win 4-3 on Friday

2/14/2025 9:32:00 PM | Women's Hockey

MINNEAPOLIS - The third-ranked University of Minnesota women's hockey team moves to a 22-9-1 (16-8-1 WCHA) record after falling 4-3 to No. 11 St. Cloud State.

St. Cloud State struck twice in the opening period. The first goal came on a power play at the 7:17 mark, with Sofianna Sundelin getting the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, Emma Gentry brought the St. Cloud lead to two. The Gophers were unable to respond through the end of the period, and the score held at 2-0. The shots on goal were even at six heading into the first intermission.

The Minnesota offense began to find its footing during the second period. Sophomore forward Emma Kreisz, back from her stint with Hungary in last week's IIHF Olympic Qualifiers, got the Gophers on the board just over a minute into the second period. It was Kreisz' sixth goal of the season, assisted by Nelli Laitinen and Ava Lindsay. Despite Minnesota outshooting the St. Cloud State 16-9 throughout the period, and each team seeing two power play opportunities, the score remained 2-1 in the Huskies' favor heading into the final period.

Sophomore forward Ava Lindsay tied the game midway through the third period, sending the puck through a tight corner of the net on a power play, assisted by Chloe Primerano and Sydney Morrow. St. Cloud State responded with four minutes to play, via Sofianna Sundelina's second goal of the game. Then, with 1:29 remaining, senior forward Ella Huber brought the game back to a tie, assisted by Peyton Hemp and Morrow, scoring her 11th goal of the season as the Gophers played with an extra attacker during a four-on-four. However, the Huskies' found a way to strike back within a minute, as Ella Anick lifted St. Cloud State to a 4-3 lead with only 30 seconds remaining. Minnesota was unable to find the back of the net through the rest of the period, cementing St. Cloud State's victory.

Quotable:
"Tough result," said head coach Brad Frost. "Not the start that we were looking for. Battled back there in the third, it was kind of a roller coaster of emotions: tying it up, and then giving one up, and tying it up, and giving one up again. The mistakes that we made tonight, they cost us, and we've got to do better here as we go forward.

Notable:
- Ella Huber registered her 48th career goal.
- Audrey Wethington broke her streak of 32 consecutive games without registering a penalty.
- The Gophers outshot the Huskies 36-20.

Up Next:
Tomorrow, the Maroon & Gold will close out their second series against St. Cloud State. Puck drop at Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. is set for 3:00 p.m. CT.
