Steveson a Semifinalist for the AAU Sullivan Award

MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota wrestler Gable Steveson has been named one of 39 semifinalists for the AAU Sullivan Award, it has been announced.

Since 1930, the AAU James E. Sullivan Award has been presented to the most exceptional athlete at the collegiate, Olympic, or other similarly elite level in the United States. As well as honoring athletic excellence, the AAU Sullivan award also recognizes the chosen athlete's character and honors their quality of leadership, citizenship and sportsmanship.

The one-week voting period to determine the finalists is now open to the public through February 25.Ā The winner of the 95thĀ AAU Sullivan Award will be announced at an awards ceremony on Tuesday, April 15, at the New York Athletic Club.

An Olympic gold medalist, two-time NCAA champion and two-time Hodge Trophy winner Steveson last competed during the 2021-22 campaign before returning this season.

The heavyweight is one of six in program history to win multiple NCAA championships (2021-22), one of eight to win three Big Ten titles (2020-22) and one of 11 to be a four-time All-American (2019-22). He boasts the best winning percentage in Gophers history with a 96-2 career record (.980), including a perfect 59-0 mark in dual competition and a 44-0 tally against Big Ten opponents.Ā Of his 96 career wins, the Apple Valley, Minn., native has recorded 15 pins, 30 tech falls and 26 major decisions.

The 2021-22 Big Ten Male Athlete of the Year and Wrestler of the Year, Steveson is on a 63-match winning streak, having gone undefeated over each of his last four seasons. It's the third longest winning streak in program history.

This season, he's 11-0 with a 100 percent bonus rate, registering two pins, eight tech falls and one major decision. He's averaging 5.091 team points per match, ranking second in the country. Steveson is 7-0 against ranked opponents this year, including a 4-0 mark against top-10 foes.
