Minnesota Overwhelms Michigan State, 37-6, on Senior Day

MINNEAPOLIS – No. 9 Minnesota (11-5, 5-3 B1G) overwhelmed Michigan State (4-9, 1-7 B1G) Sunday, 37-6, on Senior Day at Maturi Pavilion. The Golden Gophers won eight of the 10 matches, including five by bonus points and rattled off three consecutive pins between 149 and 165 pounds.

The victory was Minnesota's 14th straight over the Spartans, its longest active win streak over a Big Ten school and second longest overall behind a 21-match streak versus North Dakota State. During the 14-match streak, the Gophers have outscored the Spartans, 410-109.

Finishing the regular season 11-5 overall and 5-3 in the Big Ten, the Gophers posted 11 duals wins for the third time in the last four seasons and and fourth time overall under head coach Brandon Eggum. In addition, the team finished with a winning record in the Big Ten for the fourth straight season and seventh time under Eggum.

The dual started at 125 pounds with No. 14 Jore Volk posting a 9-2 decision over Nick Corday. Volk posted a first-period takedown, added a reversal in the second and finished off Corday with one more takedown in the closing seconds to seal his 19th win of the year, tied for the most on the team.

Michigan State picked up its first of two wins on the day when Caleb Weiand bested Blake Beissel, 4-2. Beissel, who was wrestling up from 125 and was making his season dual debut, got his points off a reversal in the first period following Weiand's opening score.

The 3-3 tie would not last long, however, as the Gophers rattled off six straight wins, starting with Vance VomBaur's tech fall at 141.

Ranked ninth nationally at the weight, VomBaur dominated Jaden Crumpler, 19-4 at the 5:47 mark. VomBaur recorded two takedowns in each of the first two periods, then added another in the third period for his third tech fall of the season, all of which have come in the last three matches.

The first of three straight pins came at 149 as redshirt senior Drew Roberts competed for last time at The Pav. The No. 18 wrestler in the country, Roberts fell behind early to Clayton Jones but built a 7-4 advantage after the first period. Jones pulled back ahead 8-5 in the second before Roberts recorded a reversal and turned Jones over. The pin, which came at the 4:38 mark, was his first since his true freshman season in February of 2022.

No. 19 Charlie Millard made it two in a row for the team, and himself, as he stopped Darius Marines at the 4:42 mark. Millard, who pinned Maryland's Mekhi Neal last Sunday, led Marines 4-0 midway through the second period. Marines tried a quick shot off a restart, but Millard circled around for the takedown and eventually recorded the pin.

The fall hat trick was capped off at 165 by No. 11 Andrew Sparks. Like Roberts, Sparks was also competing inside Maturi Pavilion for the last time in his Gophers career. Taking on DJ Shannon, Sparks opened with a first period takedown and built nearly 1:30 of riding time. Sparks' lead grew to 9-1 through two periods thanks to a reversal and turn for four nearfall points, while in the third, he got in on a single and took Shannon down before turning him for his first fall since the 2024 Soldier Salute.

The dual was clinched at 174 pounds as No. 24 Ethan Riddle fended off Connor O'Neill in a tight, 7-6 battle. O'Neill had the first takedown and built nearly two minutes of riding time, but it was Riddle who led after the first period, 4-3, thanks to an escape and short-time takedown. Riddle started on bottom in the second period and recorded a reversal, only to see O'Neill respond with one of his own. A late escape sent the match to the final period with Riddle on top, 7-5, and that's the way it would stay as Riddle held off O'Neill for his fourth Big Ten win of the season.

The matchup at 184 between No. 4 Max McEnelly and Ryan Boucher was all McEnelly, highlighted by five first-period takedowns. McEnelly then needed just 32 seconds in the second period to net the 19-4 (3:32) tech fall, his team-leading 10th of the season. Through two seasons as a starter, McEnelly is a perfect 16-0 in Big Ten matches with nine wins coming by bonus points.

Michigan State's second victory came at 197 in the only ranked matchup of the day. No. 25 Gavin Nelson faced No. 23 Kael Wisler and both wrestlers recorded escapes in regulation. No one scored in sudden victory, sending the match to tiebreakers. Nelson started on bottom and escaped after 17 seconds, but Wisler got out even quicker in his period on bottom and took Nelson down for the 5-2 decision.

The final match of the day came at heavyweight with No. 10 Koy Hopke shutting out Josh Terrill, 2-0. After a scoreless first period, Hopke escaped after 34 seconds in the second period, while in the third he rode out Terrill for the entire frame to record his team-leading sixth shutout of the year. The win was also the 19th for Hopke on the season, tying Volk for most on the roster.

With the dual season now concluded, Minnesota begins preparations for the 2026 Big Ten Championships, set for March 7-8, in University Park, Pa.
