Gophers Fall to Northwestern at Home

Dawson Garcia finished with 26 points and nine rebounds, but Northwestern (15-13, 6-11 Big Ten) jumped out to an early lead jumped out to an early lead and never trailed for the 75-63 win.Â

Garcia made 9-of-20 field goals, including 3-of-7 from three-point range, and 5-of-5 free throws. It's Garcia's 17th game with 20-plus points this season. He has scored 1,493 points in his three seasons at Minnesota and 1,988 points during his collegiate career (including prior stops at Marquette and North Carolina). He passed Tommy Davis (1,481 pts., 1982-85) for 10th on Minnesota's all-time scoring list during tonight's game.

Frank Mitchell also finished in double-figures for Minnesota, coming off the bench for 10 points, four rebounds, and a pair of blocked shots. Femi Odukale added seven points, seven boards, and team-highs of five assists and three blocks, while Lu'Cye Patterson had seven points and two steals, Parker Fox finished with six points and two rebounds, and Isaac Asuma had four points, six boards, and two assists. As a team, Minnesota was 24-of-57 (.421) from the field, including 5-of-19 (.263) from three-point range, and 10-of-14 (.714) at the line.

Northwestern made its first four field goal attempts and jumped out to a 10-0 lead before Patterson scored on a floater in the lane with 16:39 left in the half. A three-point play by Odukale cut it to 10-5, and a Garcia three-pointer pulled the Gophers within four at 12-8. The Wildcats extended the lead to 18-11 with a pair of three-pointers, as NU opened the game 4-of-5 from long-range. Garcia scored to cut it to 18-13, but NU connected on its fifth triple for an eight-point advantage. Minnesota answered with three-pointers from Brennan Rigsby and Garcia and a reverse layup by Fox to tie the score at 21-21, but Martinelli hit his second trey to end the 8-0 run. An 11-2 NU run stretched its lead to 32-23, but Mitchell's three-point play and a layup trimmed the deficit to four points with 2:40 left. NU added a couple layups for a 36-28 advantage, but Garcia drained his third three-pointer of the half to cut NU's halftime lead to 36-31.

Garcia's dunk cut the lead to 12, but Martinelli hit a three-pointer and added a layup to stretch the lead to 64-47 with 7:05 left. Minnesota went on a 5-0 run, with Garcia making a pair at the line and Patterson connecting on a three from the top of the key to pull within 64-52 with 5:21 remaining. Minnesota was unable to narrow the margin to less than 11 until Garcia made two free throws with 1:11 left to cut it 70-61. But NU was able to extend the lead back to 13 and secure its first win at Williams Arena in exactly four years.
