No. 15 'U' Set for Senior Day Sunday

Iowa, LIU and Centenary and the opponents for the quad meet

MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 15 Minnesota women's gymnastics team will finish its regular season this weekend with a quad meet against Iowa, Long Island and Centenary. The meet will take place on Sunday, March 16 at 2 p.m. CT. B1G+ will stream with Lexy Bergeland (Ramler) and Halle Remlinger on the call. Minnesota is a perfect 5-0 at home in 2025.

It will be the last ever home meet for Gophers great Mya Hooten, an 11-time All-American, six-time Big Ten individual champion and 13-time Big Ten Event Specialist of the Week award winner.

The Gophers (11-1, 8-1 B1G) finished tied for second in the Big Ten regular season standings this year with No. 8 Michigan State. Only No. 4 UCLA (9-0 B1G) had a better league record. This will be Minnesota's final preparation before the 2025 Big Ten Championships.

SCOUTING MINNESOTA

  • No. 15 Minnesota gymnastics defeated Illinois State 197.125-195.200 on Saturday afternoon in their penultimate meet of the regular season. It was Minnesota's fourth time this year going over 197. Minnesota improved to 11-1 (8-1 B1G) on the season, including a perfect 5-0 at home.
  • "I feel really good about our depth," said head coach Jenny Hansen. Obviously our top six have been consistent, but our seventh, eighth and ninth are really pushing to make lineups. It just makes all of us stronger."
    The 'U' went 49.300 on vault, 49.175 on bars, 49.200 beam, 49.350 on floor. Mya Hooten (9.900 on vault, 9.950 on floor) took home her fourth vault title of the year and ninth floor title. Jordyn Lyden (9.900 on both) won her sixth bars event title and fourth beam title.
  • Sophie Swartzmiller hit 9.875 on floor in her first ever non-exhibition routine.
  • Minnesota ranks 15th nationally in the Road to Nationals rankings with an NQS of 197.030 (196.630 avg.). The Gophers rank eighth on vault, 19th on bars, 14th on beam and 12th on floor.
  • The 'U' holds wins vs. CMU, UNH, Penn State, Iowa, Ohio State, Washington, Nebraska, Illinois, ISU, Maryland, Michigan. Its only loss came at MSU.
  • Individually, Mya Hooten (15 event titles) ranks No. 14 on vault and 11th on floor nationally this season. Jordyn Lyden ranks 31st nationally on the uneven bars. Ava Stewart ranks 23rd on vault.
  • Hooten was named an AAI Nominee in 2025 for the second consecutive year.
  • Minnesota has clinched a spot in Session III at the 2025 Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich. They will match up in the quad with No. 3 UCLA, No. 8 Michigan State and No. 17 Michigan in the top group.
  • The Gophers are coming off a 2024 season that saw them go 20-11 (6-3 Big Ten) and finish second at the B1G Championships. The Gophers went to the NCAA Regional Finals for the third time in the last four seasons and their No. 12 final ranking was the highest finish of any Big Ten team.
  • Minnesota's second place finish at the Big Ten Championships on March 23 came with a score of 197.500, missing winning the conference crown by .100 to Michigan State (197.600). It was the second-best finish at Big Ten's since 2006 (won Big Ten title in 2021).
  • The 'U' made nationals three times (2016, 2021, 2022) the past 10 years, finishing second each time in their regional. Their two regional titles in program laurels came in 1980 and 1982.

SCOUTING IOWA

  • The Hawkeyes (6-8, 5-4 Big Ten) led by first-year head coach Jen Llewellyn. She was named the fifth head coach in program history on June 6, 2024. She came to Iowa after spending three years as the head coach at Washington, where she helped them to three straight NCAA regionals.
  • UI holds Big Ten wins over Rutgers, Nebraska, Illinois, Penn State and Washington so far in 2025. Junior Karina Muñoz ranks 28rd nationally and ninth in the Big Ten on vault with and National Qualifying Score (NQS) of 9.875. Freshman phenom Aurélie Tran ranks in the top-25 on three events in the Big Ten with an NQS of 9.845 on beam (23rd), 9.870 on bars (9th) and 39.310 in the all-around (9th).

SCOUTING LIU

  • The Long Island Sharks (0-5, 0-3 EAGL) are led by second-year head coach Taylor Colwell. She came to LIU after serving as an assistant coach at Central Michigan. In her first year, the team went 12-15 and took fifth at the EAGL Championships. Gymnast Syd Morris won the All-Around title and competed at the NCAA Regionals. She was the first gymnast in program history to win the AA title.
  • LIU celebrated three seniors on March 3 in their final home meet, Kira Sanchez, Ella Barrington and Brooke Burkhart. Raphaelle Perreault scored 9.850 on beam to tie for the event title. It was the team's top individual score in any meet this season.

SCOUTING CENTENARY

  • Centenary (1-13, 0-7 MIC) is led by third-year head coach, Dr. Meg Crowley. She was a former Centenary gymnast and graduated in 2013. Last year, Crowley led the Ladies to another successful season as they finished fifth at the annual Midwest Independent Conference Championships, and six Centenary gymnasts qualified as individuals for the 2024 USA Gymnastics Women's Collegiate National Championships.
  • This season, Centenary is led by Amy Foret (9.575 floor, 9.458 vault avg.) and Sophie Schmitz (37.661 all-around average).

2025 SENIOR DAY

  • Minnesota will honor five seniors on Sunday afternoon, including fifth years Mya Hooten and Emily Koch in addition to 'true' seniors in Anahit Assadourian, Marissa Jencks and Lauren Pearl.
  • This senior class has rewritten the history books at Minnesota. They recorded the top four scores in school history, including the program-record score of 198.025 as well as own the top event score on bars, beam and floor.
  • Emily and Mya helped the team claim the 2021 BIG 10 Championship in their freshman season. This class contributed to the highest nationals finish in program history, finishing sixth in the nation after an appearance in the NCAA Championships for the second year in a row in 2022.
  • Overall, this class has combined to accomplish 14 Academic All-Big Ten selections, 12 WCGA Academic All-America honors, 7 WCGA All-America honors, 6 Big Ten individual titles, 5 All-Big Ten nods, 5 Big Ten All-Championships team honors, 4 NCAA All-American selections, 2 AAI Award nominations and one NCAA Regional Event Title.

HOOTEN BY THE NUMBERS

  • Mya Hooten is an 11-time All-American (7-time WCGA, 4-Time NCAA Championships), six-time Big Ten Champion (three floor, two vault, one bars), four-time All-Big Ten selection (3-time first team), four-time Big Ten All-Championships Team honoree, four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, two-time Academic All-American and an NCAA Regional Champion. She's also tallied nine perfect 10's on floor.
  • In her career, she's participated in 188 total routines (62 bars, 61 vault, 59 floor, five beam). She's been 9.900-or-better on 95 of those routines (50.5%). Hooten has gone 9.900-or-better on 29 of 61 vaults (47.5%) and 51 of 59 floor routines (86.4%).

WCGA AND ROAD TO NATIONALS RANKINGS

  • After week 10 the Gophers came in at No. 15 in the Road to Nationals rankings. They rank No. 8 on vault, 19 on bars, 14 on beam and 12 on the floor. The team's NQS is 197.030 and average of 196.630. Minnesota's team-high score is 197.375.
  • Minnesota finished the 2024 season at No. 12 in the Road to Nationals rankings. They ranked 19th on vault, 21st on bars, eighth on beam and 11 th on the floor. Individually, Mya Hooten ranked eighth nationally on vault and second on the floor, earning WCGA All-America honors in both.
  • Minnesota began 2025 ranked No. 18 in the WCGA Preseason poll. Now, they rank behind only No. 4 UCLA and No. 8 Michigan St. in the B1G.

ROAD TO NATIONALS INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS

  • On vault, Mya Hooten (9.880 avg.) ranks 14th nationally (4th in B1G) while Ava Stewart (9.836 avg.) places 23rd (8th in B1G).
  • Jordyn Lyden (9.882 avg.) comes in at No. 31 nationally (6th in B1G) on bars. Hooten ranks 14th in the B1G (9.825 avg).
  • Jordyn Lyden (9.845 avg.) ranks 38th in the country and 7th in the Big Ten.
  • Mya Hooten (9.914 avg.) ranks third in the Big Ten and 11th nationally on the floor.

EVENT TITLES APLENTY FOR THE 'U'

  • Overall in 2025, Minnesota has won 41 event titles in 10 meets. This includes 10 vault (by four individuals), 10 bars (three individuals), 11 beam (four individuals) and 10 floor (two individuals).
  • Mya Hooten leads the team with 15 event titles (nine floor, four vault, two bars) while Jordyn Lyden has 10 (six bars, four beam). Freshman Ava Stewart ranks third with six (three vault, three beam). Eight different Golden Gophers hold at least one event title this season.

POSTSEASON AWAITS

  • Minnesota will compete in session III at the 2025 Big Ten Championships on March 22 in Ann Arbor, Mich. The meet will begin at 5 p.m. ET/4 p.m. CT and the Big Ten Network will televise. Minnesota will compete with No. 4 UCLA, No. 8 Michigan State and No. 17 Michigan. Minnesota finished second behind Michigan State at last year's championships, losing by just .100.
  • The Gophers are well positioned for NCAA Regionals in 2025. The regionals are hosted by Alabama, Penn State, Utah and Washington. As of today, Minnesota would likely go to Seattle Regional as the No. 15 seed.
