No. 12 'U' Rumbles to Sweep over Ramblers

Kelly Kinney led the way with 11 kills
CHICAGO, Ill. --Â The No. 12 Minnesota volleyball team defeated the Loyola Chicago Ramblers on Friday evening in three sets. The scores were 25-19, 25-10, 25-15.
Kelly Kinney led Minnesota with 11 kills while Alex Acevedo had eight kills with six digs. Stella Swenson paced the offense with 28 assists and five kills while Mckenna Garr had 20 digs. Jordan Taylor led the block with five on the night, a career-high.
The Gophers (9-1, 0-0 Big Ten) outhit the Ramblers (3-7, 0-0 A10) .375 to .061, tallying 43 kills to Loyola Chicago's 30. Minnesota also led in blocks (7 to 3), digs (52 to 40), aces (4 to 2) and assists (40 to 28).
Leyna Nguyen led Loyola Chicago with 12 kills while Sam Falk had 17 digs to lead the defense.
The No. 12 Gophers held the Ramblers to just .061 hitting, their second time this year holding a team under .100.
How It Happened
SET 1 | Minnesota started out strong, scoring five of the first seven points, getting three kills from Stella Swenson. Loyola would score three of the next four to get within one at 6-5. Kills from Gilk, Taylor and Acevedo along with an ace from Acevedo made it 11-6, Minnesota. The 'U' would keep the pressure on, staying up a handful to go up 15-10 into the media break. LC scored two straight after the break before two from the 'U' made it 17-12, forcing the home team into its first timeout of the frame. Loyola would get as close as four at 20-16 before the Gophers got kills from Acevedo and Kinney to go up 22-16, leading to another timeout with the set on the line. The Gophers would eventually close out the frame, 25-19, to go up one set to nothing.
SET 2 | The Gophers took the early lead in set two as well, scoring six of the first nine. Kinney had three more kills to get the offense going. A kill and an ace from LC made it 6-5 before Minnesota scored four straight, getting kills from Swenson and Myers plus a block from the pair. Loyola Chicago called timeout with Minnesota leading 10-5. Minnesota would extend its lead after the break, going up by as many as eight at 16-8 before the Ramblers called their final timeout of the frame. The 'U' kept the foot on the gas pedal all the way to the finish line, winning 25-10. Minnesota finished the set on a 15-4 run after leading 10-6 midway through the frame. After two sets, the Gophers were outhitting LC .387 to .041. Kinney led the way with eight kills while Gilk had six.
SET 3 | The third set was back and forth, with neither team leading by more than two points for most of it. The Gophers got some subs in the match, including getting Georgia Lee in at setter and Olivia Swenson in to serve for a rotation. After being tied 8-8, the Gophers scored five of the next seven to take a 13-10 advantage. After two straight from the Ramblers, a kill from Kinney and an attacking error from LC made it 15-12 Minnesota heading into the media break. An ace from Kate Thibault and an LC attacking error made it 17-12, Gophers, leading to the final timeout of the set for the Ramblers. Loyola would get as close as four at 18-14 before the Gophers reeled off four straight to go up 22-14, leading to a final timeout from the home team. A solo block by Jordan Taylor, ace from Olivia Swenson and kill from Taylor ended the match with a 25-15 tally.
