Lourdes Myers led the way with seven blocks

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The No. 14 Minnesota volleyball defeated the Vanderbilt Commodores three sets to none on Friday night at Memorial Gymnasium. Minnesota took the win 25-23, 25-20, 25-21.

Julia Hanson led Minnesota with 13 kills while McKenna Garr paced the backcourt with a career-high 16 digs in her first start at libero. Stella Swenson paced the offense with 30 assists while Lourdes Myers had a team-best seven blocks.

The Gophers (4-1, 0-0 Big Ten) outhit the Commodores (2-3, 0-0 SEC) .247 to .116, tallying 35 kills to VU's 33. The 'U' had a season-best 12 blocks while the Commodores had just two. Minnesota also had more digs (36 to 29).

Kamryn Chaney led Vanderbilt with 11 kills while Hailee Mack had 10 digs.



How It Happened
SET 1 | Vanderbilt took the early lead, scoring five of the first seven points before the Gophers responded with six of the next seven to go up 8-6. VU would bounce back on an 8-3 spurt, taking a 14-11 lead and forcing a timeout from head coach Keegan Cook. The 'U' answered with a 5-0 run, paced by a pair of blocks, to go up 17-15, leading to a Vandy timeout. The Commodores would get as close as 19-18 before two kills from Acevedo put Minnesota up 22-18, forcing VU's last timeout of the frame. VU would get within one twice at 23-22 and 24-23 before a Hanson kill put the frame away, 25-23. Hanson and Acevedo had five kills each while Swenson had 12 assists.

SET 2 | The two teams split the first 14 points before the 'U' took a 9-7 lead on a block by Gilk and Minatee and a VU attacking error. VU would fight back to tie it at 12-12. After a Myers kill, the Commodores scored five of the next six to go up 17-14, forcing a Minnesota timeout. The Gophers would score three straight to tie it up, getting an ace from Swenson and kills from Aceedo and Minatee. The two teams would exchange points for the next four, before the Gophers finished the set on a 7-1 run, winning 25-20. Minnnesota had three blocks in the spurt, with Lourdes Myers involved in each one.

SET 3 | Minnesota and Vanderbilt split the first 12 points in set three before the 'U' began accelerating in the middle. A 6-0 run was led by Myers and Swenson, who combined for two blocks and two kills to help the Gophers go up 12-6, leading to a Vanderbilt timeout. The Commodores scored two straight to make it 12-8 before the 'U' poured on five more, getting three straight aces from Georgia Lee in the process. Minnesota went up 16-8, leading to a VU timeout. Minnesota would go up by as many as nine at 20-11. VU would score four straight, getting two aces, to cut the lead to five at 20-15. VU would close the gap to just three points at 24-21 before Minnesota closed it out, 25-21.

» Friday's match was the first home match at Memorial Gymnasium for Vanderbilt's volleyball program, who is in their first year back playing after a 45-year hiatus.
» Stella Swenson posted 30 assists, a match-high.
» Lourdes Myers had six kills and seven blocks, a season-best for her.
» Julia Hanson had 13 kills to lead Minnesota. She's had 10-or-more kills in 20 consecutive matches dating back to last season, including all five this year.
» McKenna Garr had a career-high 16 digs in her first start at libero, replacing the injured Zeynep Palabiyik.
» Minnesota had a season-high 12 blocks.
