'U' Downed in Overtime by Top-Ranked Wolverines

1/17/2026 10:00:00 PM | Men's Hockey

Gophers net a pair of power-play goals Saturday

MINNEAPOLIS - The Golden Gophers men's hockey team was unable to hold onto a one-goal lead versus No. 1-ranked Michigan and fell 3-2 in overtime from 3M Arena at Mariucci Saturday night.

Minnesota (8-14-1 overall, 4-8-0 B1G, 14 points) got power-play goals from Brodie Ziemer and Brody Lamb in the second period to take a 2-1 lead on the Wolverines (19-4-0 overall, 10-3-0 B1G, 28 points). The visitors responded by scoring an unassisted goal late in the middle frame, eventually forcing overtime, where it claimed the win on another unassisted tally.

The action went up and down the ice to begin the series finale, but it was the visitors that struck first for the second-straight outing, this time at the 5:54 mark. A turnover by the Gophers at their own blue line led to an odd-man rush and Michigan scored via a rebound in the crease. Four minutes later, Javon Moore used his size and speed to rush up the left wing and put a shot on target, looking to pull even. The first penalty of the night went against the home side, and it used blocked shots and timely saves from Luca Di Pasquo to shut down the chance. Moore had another quality bid late thanks to a quick pass to the slot from LJ Mooney that forced a quick save, but it remained a 1-0 deficit at the first intermission.

It was all Maroon and Gold to begin the middle stanza, igniting the home crowd, as Jimmy Clark nearly used a one-timer from the crease to tie the game 34 seconds into the action. Brodie Ziemer and Beckett Hendrickson kept up the offensive pressure and forced saves from the Michigan goaltender, leading to their first man advantage at 4:31. After winning the ensuing faceoff, the Gophers peppered the goal with a flurry of shots that were turned aside. Ziemer finally broke through and his diving effort tapped home a rebound at the left post, making it a 1-1 contest.

Momentum stayed with Minnesota and Moore came inches from banking in the go-ahead goal from behind the net. Brody Lamb kept on the attack where his stick was broken in half with a slash and the Gophers moved to another man advantage at 8:04. The senior captain called his own number to take a 2-1 advantage, wiring home a shot from the right circle.

With the home crowd firmly behind the players on the ice, the Maroon and Gold put together consecutive shifts in the offensive zone, leading to back-to-back icings by Michigan as the pressure mounted. With just 64 seconds left in the second period, the Wolverines intercepted an errant pass up the middle and scored an unassisted goal to tie the game, 2-2, through 40 minutes.

The visitors opened the final frame with a strong push and forced Di Pasquo into making quick pad stops. Both sides were able to generate opportunities on frame, trying to find a goal to take the lead before Jimmy Clark was tripped and the Gophers earned their third 5-on-4 bid at 8:28. The power play was unable to sustain possession and the two minutes expired with the score still tied, 2-2. As tensions rose on the ice, it was stout defending that kept each team in a standstill and the contest headed into an extra session.

Di Pasquo was strong to deny the visitors early in overtime before Ziemer's rush gave the Gophers their best chance at the winner. Ultimately, it was a turnover at the defensive blue line that allowed Michigan to score on a breakaway for the 3-2 overtime victory.

Noteworthy
After matching a career high with 47 saves Friday night, Di Pasquo followed up that effort by making 45 stops Friday ... It was his seventh time this season registering at least 30 saves, including each of his last five starts, where he is averaging 41.6 saves per game in that five-game stretch ... Ziemer continued his torrid scoring on the man advantage, putting away his eighth power-play tally to tie for the NCAA lead, and team-best 14th goal overall, which moved him into the top 10 nationally ... The sophomore added an assist and stretched his point total to 22 thanks to 10 goals in the past 11 games on the sixth multi-point performance of his 2025-26 season ... For the third-straight year, Lamb reached double-digit goals as he found the back of the net with his 10th goal Saturday ... The Byron, Minn., native broke a four-game goal drought, matching his longest of the campaign, behind his 20th point overall ... Mooney put together his fifth multi-point effort with the two man-advantage helpers, reaching 18 points to pace the Gophers' rookie class ... Luke Mittelstadt kept pace with Mooney and used two assists to stay tied for the team lead at 14 assists with his third outing of multiple assists this year ... Minnesota scored on the power play in a game for the eighth time over its last 10 outings, totaling 12 goals in that span, going 2-for-3 Saturday ... The Gophers dropped to 1-2-1 in overtime this season with their third game into an extra session across the past seven appearances.

Coach Motzko's Comments
"Tonight was a complete reversal in our effort, our physicality," Minnesota head coach Bob Motzko said. "We made it a hockey game. We just couldn't get our hands on it in the third period and ended up chasing it around a little bit. But for the most part they got back after it tonight."
