Gophers Win Final Four Matches to Beat Badgers, 26-10

1/25/2026 3:38:00 PM | Wrestling

MINNEAPOLIS – In the 108th all-time meeting, No. 7 Minnesota (8-4, 2-2 B1G) won the final four matches to take down No. 26 Wisconsin (10-2, 2-2 B1G) in a 26-10 dual win Sunday in front of a season-high crowd of 3,054 at Maturi Pavilion.

The win marked the fourth straight in the series for Minnesota and 13th victory in the last 14 meetings. It was also the 70th overall win for the Golden Gophers over the Badgers, 18 more than they have against any other school.

The dual started at 197 pounds with No. 30 Gavin Nelson facing No. 25 Wyatt Ingham. Nelson led 1-0 going to the third but Ingham escaped and Nelson was hit with his second stall call, putting him behind 2-1. With less than a minute to go, Nelson went ahead on a go-behind and takedown as Ingham tried to roll through. The win gives Nelson two straight Big Ten wins.

Wisconsin tied the dual up at 3-3 after a top-10 match at heavyweight as No. 9 Braxton Amos topped No. 10 Koy Hopke, 2-0. Both points for Amos came in the second period as Hopke was called for locked hands before Amos escaped.

Minnesota pulled back ahead in another ranked matchup as No. 9 Jore Volk outlasted No. 16 Nicolar Rivera in overtime at 125 pounds, 4-1. Both recorded escapes in regulation, but in sudden victory, Volk got the winning takedown off a double-underhook to a single-leg. The win improved Volk to 16-3 on the season and 7-1 against ranked opponents.

The Badgers' only lead of the dual came after the match at 133 pounds as No. 12 Zan Fugitt majored Brandon Morvari, 15-3, but the 7-6 lead did not last long as Vance VomBaur picked up a major of his own at 141.

Ranked ninth in the country, VomBaur dispatched Carson Exferd, 11-1, to put Minnesota back in front, 10-7. VomBaur led 3-0 through one period, then added an escape and another takedown for a 7-0 advantage. One final takedown for good measure resulted in VomBaur's team-leading seventh major decision of the season.

A 4-1 decision from No. 16 Joseph Zargo over No. 23 Drew Roberts at 149 pounds evened the score at 10-10, but Minnesota followed with four straight wins, including three by bonus points, to claim victory.

It all started at 157 pounds when No. 21 Charlie Millard posted a 15-4 major decision over No. 26 Luke Mechler. Millard built a 3-1 lead through the opening period then broke the match open in the second with a sequence that saw him score a takedown and four nearfall points. An escape, plus another takedown and riding time resulted in Millard's first bonus-point win over a ranked opponent this season (excluding an injury default over then-No. 8 Kannon Webster of Illinois).

Andrew Sparks made it two major decisions in a row when the 11th-ranked graduate senior delivered an 11-1 win over No. 24 Cody Goebel at 165. It was all Sparks from the get-go as he posted a takedown and three nearfall points in the opening period. After an escape in the second, he added another takedown and riding time to win for the eighth time in his last nine matches.

The dual was clinched at 174 as No. 24 Ethan Riddle handled Luke Condon. Scoreless through the first period, Riddle rolled through a shot from Condon to score first but Condon responded with a takedown of his own. An escape from Riddle put him ahead 4-3 going to the third. In the final period, a takedown in the closing seconds sealed the match for Riddle and the dual for Minnesota.

The exclamation point came at 184 pounds as No. 4 Max McEnelly romped David Malin in a first-period tech fall, 21-6, at 2:31. The seven-takedown barrage marked McEnelly's quickest stoppage since the season opener of his true freshman season when he had two matches at the Bison Open end under 2:11. It was his quickest tech fall in a dual in his career.

Minnesota returns to action next Friday at No. 4 Iowa. Match time is set for 7 p.m. on Big Ten Plus.
