Schmitz Earns Big Ten Women’s Tennis Player of The Week

MINNEAPOLIS - Senior Aiva Schmitz has been named Big Ten Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the Big Ten Conference announced today. This marks the second honor of her collegiate career and first since March 13, 2024. Schmitz is also the last Gopher to receive the honor, also that same week. 
 
In the Maroon and Gold's opening weekend against Iowa State and North Dakota, Schmitz earned singles wins for Minnesota in each match. Against Iowa State, Schmitz defeated No. 45 ranked Maria De La Paz Alberto at the No. 1 singles spot, winning the match in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. The Gophers won the overall match 5-2, notching a victory in their first match of the season. Against North Dakota, Schmitz again secured the win from the No. 1 singles spot, defeating Ethel Li 6-0, 6-4. At No. 3 doubles against North Dakota, Schmitz and partner Nora Knezevic won, 6-1, helping the Gophers claim the doubles point. Minnesota earned the overall match 6-1 against the Fighting Hawks.
 
Minnesota travels to Dekalb, Ill., to play doubleheader versus host Northern Illinois and Western Michigan on Jan. 31.
