MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 3-ranked University of Minnesota women's hockey team earned a 3-2 overtime victory over No. 1 Wisconsin on Friday night at Ridder Arena. Avery Hovland scored the tying goal midway through the third period before Molly Jordan netted the game-winner in overtime.
Sydney Morrow opened the scoring for the Gophers just 3:47 into the first period with her seventh goal of the season. Jamie Nelson lifted a Badger stick to free the puck before finding Ava Lindsay in the low slot, who fed Morrow for a one-timer to give Minnesota a 1-0 lead after one period.
Wisconsin responded with two goals late in the second period, scoring at 14:28 and again at 15:28 to take a 2-1 advantage.
The Gophers evened the score early in the third period. Hovland picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone, deked past a defender, and snapped a wrist shot glove-side high to tie the game at 2-2 at the 9:27 mark.
Neither team scored in the remainder of regulation, sending the contest to overtime. Hannah Clark made a key save early in the extra frame on a one-on-zero rush, before Jordan collected a loose puck, toe-dragged around a defender, and fired a shot near-side high for the game-winning goal 1:17 into overtime.
With the win, Minnesota improves to 23-4-0 overall and 17-4-0 in WCHA play. Wisconsin falls to 23-2-2 overall and 17-2-2 in conference action.
Quotable
"An incredible game and a great atmosphere," said head coach Brad Frost. "There were over 3,000 people here in the stands. Just hearing the crowd go crazy when Avery Hovland tied it up in the second. Obviously Molly [Jordan]'s goal at the end of the game was huge as well. It was a really good effort with both teams a little short handed. We're really proud of our group, the way they stepped up, competed with one another and stayed with it."
Notable
- Minnesota defeated Wisconsin for the second time this season, remaining the only team to beat them.
- Jordan scored her first game-winning goal of the season.
