Gophers Knock Off No. 19 Iowa at the Barn

1/6/2026 10:13:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Langston Reynolds made 9-of-13 field goals to finish with a season-high 22 points, and Cade Tyson added 16 points, as Minnesota (10-5, 3-1 Big Ten) fought off a furious rally to win its fifth-straight game, 70-67, over No. 19 Iowa (12-3, 2-2 B1G) at Williams Arena.

Head coach Niko Medved's second home win against a Top 25 team helped the Gophers remain a perfect 9-0 at Williams Arena this season. The Gophers defeated No. 22 Indiana here, 73-64, on Dec. 3. All this while playing without injured starters Chancey Willis Jr. and Robert Vaihola. It's the second-straight season with two Top 25 wins for Minnesota, which defeated No. 20 Michigan and No. 15 Oregon last season.

In addition to Reynolds' game-high 22 points, he added five rebounds and four assists. Tyson had 16 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals for his 15th game in double-figures. Jaylen Crocker-Johnson added 10 points, a team-high six rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and two steals, while Isaac Asuma had 10 points, two rebounds, and a pair of steals, and Bobby Durkin finished with nine points and two assists. Minnesota improved to 6-0 this season when four or more players score in double-figures.

As a team, the Gophers made 22-of-47 (.468) field goals, including 5-of-20 three-pointers, and 21-of-28 free throws. The Hawkeyes had a 39-28 advantage in rebounds. Iowa made 25-of-63 (.397) field goals, including 7-of-26 (.269) three-pointers, and 10-of-13 (.769) free throws. Bennett Stirtz led Iowa with 21 points, all in the second half, while Kael Combs had 14 points, Isaiah Howard had 10 points and six boards, and Cooper Koch finished with nine points and six rebounds.

Minnesota led 6-3 at the first media timeout with 15:41 remaining in the half. Durkin opened the scoring on a backdoor layup, and Asuma added a layup and an 18-foot jumper for the early three-point lead. Minnesota stretched its lead to 12-3, as Reynolds added a layup and two free throws and Tyson knocked down a 12-foot jumper, making it a 10-0 run for the Gophers. The Hawkeyes broke the streak with a 6-0 run to get within 12-9, but a Reynolds layup gave him six points with 10:20 left.

Iowa extended its run to 17-4 over a 7-minute, 33-second span to take a 20-16 lead with 6:23 left in the half, but Minnesota responded with a 9-0 run on a jumper from Crocker-Johnson, a jumper and a dunk from Reynolds, and a three by Tyson with 3:57 left. Following the final media timeout, Tyson added another three from the top of the key to put the Gophers up, 28-20. A corner three-pointer by Kai Shinholster with 0:32 left closed out the scoring for Minnesota, which went on a 15-4 run over the final 6:04 to lead 31-24 at the half.

Reynolds and Tyson each had 10 first-half points to lead the Gophers at the break, combining to make 8-of-11 field goals. As a team, Minnesota made 13-of-24 (.542) field goals, including 3-of-11 (.273) three-pointers, and 2-of-2 free throws. Iowa held a 17-12 advantage in rebounding, and the Hawkeyes were 11-of-29 (.379) from the field, including 2-of-9 (.222) from beyond the arc. Combs paced Iowa with nine points at the break and Koch added seven, but leading scorer Stirtz picked up two early fouls and was scoreless in the first half.

Reynolds scored five points during a 7-2 run to start the second half, as the Gophers extended the lead to 38-26 with 17:28 left, but Iowa cut the lead back to seven with a 5-0 run. A pair of Tyson free throws ended the run and put the Gophers up 40-31, and two free throws by Crocker-Johnson kept the Gophers up by nine at 42-33 with 12:22 remaining. A pair of Iowa three-pointers around a Reynolds layup trimmed Minnesota's lead to 44-39, but Asuma scored four points on a couple trips to the free throw line and Durkin drained a transition three at the 10:00 mark to make it 51-39, forcing Iowa coach Ben McCollum to call a timeout.

Durkin added two free throws to make it a 9-0 Gophers run before a Stirtz jumper cut it to 53-41 with 9:17 left. A Tyson layup on a cut to the basket with 6:36 remaining put the Gophers up 58-44, but Stirtz made five-straight free throws on back-to-back possessions to narrow the margin to single-digits at 58-49. Iowa continued to pull closer, cutting the Gophers' lead to 60-56 with 3:23 remaining. A Reynolds layup put the Gophers up six, but Stirtz hit a three to make it 62-59 with 2:29 left. A Tyson free throw put the Gophers up four, but the Hawkeyes retook a 64-63 lead on a short jumper by Koch with 1:14 left.

Trailing for the first time since a 20-18 Iowa lead in the first half, Crocker-Johnson nailed a clutch three-pointer with 1:01 left, and Durkin went to the line to add a pair of free throws for a 68-64 lead with 0:35 remaining. Stirtz answered with a three-pointer with 0:16 left to cut it to a one-point game. Asuma made two clutch free throws for a 70-67 lead, and Iowa missed three attempts to tie the game in the final seconds.

The Gophers continue their three-game homestand versus USC on Friday, Jan. 9. Tipoff at Williams Arena is set for 7:30 p.m. CST, and the game will be televised on Big Ten Network.
