Gophers Produce Elite Marks at Gopher Classic, Fairgrounds Invitational

2/7/2026 8:02:00 PM | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field

Two Gophers produced Minnesota top-10 all-time performances in Indianapolis.

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota saw a number of high-level performances go down between Minneapolis at the Gopher Classic and Indianapolis at the Fairgrounds Invitational. Kitania Headley and Zariah Greaves both etched their names on top 10 lists at Minnesota on Friday while a number of unattached student-athletes had outstanding performances on Saturday.

FAIRGROUNDS INVITATIONAL RECAP
The Fairgrounds Invite began on Friday, at Fall River Pavilion in Indianapolis, the same location as the 2026 Big Ten Indoor Championships later in February. Greaves produced her 7.47 in the final of the 60m where she captured third overall out of lane seven. Greaves tied herself with Kadian Douglas, who set the same 7.47 time back in 2006 for the Maroon and Gold.

Kitania Headley was the second Gopher to produce a lifetime best in Indianapolis. Headley clocked a 1:30.47 to claim the win at the meet and improve her No. 8 all-time spot in the event at the 'U'. The sophomore's sub 1:31 time in the 600m makes her the fourth Gopher to do so since 2021.

GOPHER CLASSIC
Back at the University Fieldhouse in Minneapolis, it was Sofia Condon (3.92m | 12-10 1/4) who picked up a victory in the pole vault while 10 other Gophers claimed wins as unattached student-athletes.

One of the highlights of the day came from Charles Godfred in both the long jump and the 60m. Godfred, a two-time outdoor Big Ten long jump champion, set a new University Fieldhouse record of 7.93m (26-0 1/4) to win the competition. Earlier in the 60m preliminaries, the Nigerian clocked a 6.61 to hold the top spot out of the qualification round, a lifetime best in the event for Godfred by 0.01 seconds.

Fellow Nigerian Precious Opinion had a stellar jump series of his own in the triple jump. The second-year Gopher put forth multiple lifetime bests on his way to a final leap of 15.80m (51-10) to win the Gopher Classic. The nearly 52-foot triple jump would rank him sixth all-time on the Maroon and Gold's outdoor top-10 list in the event.

With Godfred out of the 60m final, Wanyae Belle claimed the 60m title with an impressive showing of 6.67, a personal best for the British Virgin Islands, native. Also running unattached in the runner-up spot for Minnesota was Trei Thorogood at 6.70.

In the weight throw it was a pair of Minnesota alumni that took center stage with wins. NCAA hammer throw champion Kostas Zaltos won the men's competition at 22.96m (75-4) while Nayoka Clunis claimed the win at 22.93m (75-2 3/4) in Minneapolis. Of note, Pavlos Tzamtzis, competing unattached, posted a lifetime best weight throw of 20.37m (66-10) which is about nine feet further than his previous best in the indoor event.

Additionally, former Gopher and 110m hurdles All-American Christian Martin also returned to University Fieldhouse on Saturday and won the 60m hurdles in a time of 7.80.

Next week the women's track and field program will travel to the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., for a two-day meet from February 13-14. The next home meet for the Maroon and Gold will be the final indoor home meet on February 20, the Snowshoe Open.
