Gophers Come Up Short in 6-4 Loss at No. 1 UCLA

4/18/2026 8:37:00 PM | Baseball

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. – The University of Minnesota baseball team held a pair of leads throughout today's game two against No. 1 UCLA, but ultimately came up short, falling to the Bruins 6-4 at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Tyler Hemmesch came out of the bullpen for Minnesota and was credited with the loss. Adam Urban was a bright spot for the Golden Gophers, coming out of the bullpen and throwing one scoreless inning with no walks and one strikeout.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Gophers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Jack Spanier came across to score on an RBI grounder from Weber Neels, giving Minnesota an early lead.

After the Bruins rallied to tie the ballgame at one, the Gophers came back to retake the lead in the sixth inning. Minnesota scored twice on a two-run homer off the bat of Ty Allen, which brought the Gophers lead to 3-1.

Minnesota's lead had evaporated by the time the eighth inning came around and turned into a 5-3 UCLA advantage, when the Gophers cut the deficit to 5-4 with a solo home run from Neels.

The Gophers were unable to get any closer, as UCLA added one run to their tally in the bottom of the eighth on the way to a 6-4 final.

GAME NOTES

» Minnesota's highest scoring inning was the sixth, when it pushed two runs across.
» Minnesota pitchers faced 40 UCLA hitters in the game, allowing nine ground balls and eight fly balls while striking out five.
» The Golden Gophers drew four walks from UCLA pitching.
» Allen led the Golden Gophers at the plate, going 1 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs.
