Gophers Cruise Past North Dakota, 6-2, in Midweek Win

MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota Golden Gophers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to a 6-2 win against the North Dakota Fighting Hawks on Tuesday.
Natalie Susa (1-7) started in the circle and picked up the win for Minnesota (15-30). The right-hander went four innings, giving up one run on four hits, allowing two walks and striking out four.
Offensively, the Golden Gophers were led by Tara Wolocko, who went 3-for-4 on the day with a double and two RBIs. Maggie Werner furnished a standout performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-2 with a double, two walks and two RBIs. Cassie Johnson also contributed for Minnesota, putting together zero hits in one trip to the plate while adding three walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Golden Gophers got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom of the first inning with the game still scoreless. Johnson came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minnesota and get them on the board.
The Golden Gophers then held the Fighting Hawks scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. The Minnesota offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Werner, which brought the Golden Gophers lead to 5-0.
North Dakota narrowed Minnesota's lead to 5-1 before the Golden Gophers stretched the advantage to 6-1 in the fifth inning. The Golden Gophers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Wolocko. North Dakota put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Minnesota still coasted to the 6-2 win.
