Chris Johnson joined the University of Minnesota staff as an Assistant Athletic Trainer in the spring of 2020 and works with the Baseball team. Johnson comes to the U of M after 14 seasons working as an Athletic Trainer throughout the Minnesota Twins' Minor League system, most recently with the Class AAA Rochester Red Wings.

Prior to serving as the athletic trainer of the Red Wings from 2018-19, Johnson spent 12 seasons with the Twins' Class AA Chattanooga Lookouts. In addition to his work with the Twins, Johnson has spent the previous off-seasons working with Sports and Orthopedic Specialists, as well as several winter youth baseball programs. The latter includes experience assisting with the Twins Training Academy.

Johnson has extensive experience working with overhead throwing athletes and was heavily involved with the Sports and Orthopedic Specialists’ Return to Throw Program, designed to assist athletes who are coming back from shoulder or elbow injuries. Johnson has also assisted with the development of various other throwing-related programs, such as the Return to Pitch and UCL management protocols.  He also possesses previous experience assisting former members of the Maroon and Gold in their professional careers including Mike Kvasnicka, Kyle Knudson, Nate Hanson and A.J. Petterson.

Chris is a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) and a MN State Licensed Athletic Trainer (LAT).  He holds certification in Graston Technique M1, Gray Institute CAFS and Functional Soft Tissue Transformation, SFMA, FMS Level 1, Functional Range Conditioning and Functional Range Release.   He has also attended courses of Applied Techniques of Manual Therapy focused on mobilization of the cervical spine, thoracic spine and ribs.  Johnson completed the Cressey Sports Performance Elite Baseball Mentorship in 2018.
