The Anteaters (3-1) used a 14-of-16 performance from the free throw line in the first half to take a 33-25 lead at intermission. Minnesota, meanwhile, was ice-cold from the field hitting 30 percent from the floor (9-30) and going 0-8 from three-point range.
The Gophers rallied to within six points three times in the second half, twice on three-point field goals by Lindsay Lieser, but could get no closer. Seven straight points by Irvine's Megan Stafford gave the Anteaters their biggest lead of the game, 12 points, in the final minutes to put the game away.
Minnesota continued to struggle on the offensive end, managing just 29 points in the second half after scoring 25 in the first 20 minutes. The Gophers finished the game shooting 30 percent from the field, also hurting themselves with 20 turnovers.
Senior guard Erin Olson recorded the first double-double of her career, scoring 12 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Trish McGhee matched Olson's 12 points for team scoring honors.
Stafford led all scorers with 18 points. Irvine finished an impressive 20-of-24 from the free throw line for 83 percent.
The Gophers' next action is Friday, Dec. 3 at Bradley.
