MEN'S TENNIS TEAM DEFEATS NORTHWESTERN 5-2

The 23-ranked University of Minnesota men's tennis team defeated Northwestern 5-2 in Evanston, Ill., Sunday afternoon. The Golden Gophers won two doubles matches and four single matches to score four points and defeat the Wildcats.

Minnesota dropped the first two singles matches, but freshman Thomas Haug of Zurich, Switzerland, defeated Martin Bengtsson 1-6, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3 singles to get Minnesota on the board. Junior Martin Michalowski also won at No. 4 defeating Joost Hol 6-1, 6-4. Sophomore Jon Svensson defeated Brad Erikson 7-6 (10), 4-6, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Sophomore Jorge Duenas defeated Derrick Nguyen 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.

The doubles team of Tom Chicoine and Michalowski defeated Martin Bengtsson and Doug Bohaboy 8-4 at the No. 1 doubles position. Duenas and sophomore Tyson Parry defeated Brad Erickson and Derrick Nguyen 8-5 at No. 2 doubles.
