The Gophers' All-American pairing will play next on Wednesday evening.
ORLANDO, Fla. - In what may have been a shocker to everyone except those inside the Gopher locker room, Minnesota's golden duo of Siim Troost and Vlad Lobak pulled off the upset of the tournament thus far, knocking off the top-seeded Tim Sandkaulen and Finn Reynolds of Ole Miss by a score of 6-4, 3-6, 1-0(4).
Tuesday night's showdown began with a very competitive first-set, as the opposing teams traded games for the majority of the set, however it was the Minnesota duo that was able to gain the momentum to secure the 6-4 set win.
In the second set, Sandkaulen and Reynolds jumped up out to a lightning quick 4-0 lead, and while Troost and Lobak looked to battle back to bring the second set in reach, the Ole Miss pairing was able to maintain their lead and force a tie-breaking third set.
In the ten-point tiebreaker though, it was all Troost and Lobak, who controlled the tempo throughout the tie-breaking set and were able to complete the upset victory.
Tuesday's win counts as the fourth-ranked victory on the season for Siim Troost and Vlad Lobak, while also pushing their record to 12-2 on the season and earning NCAA All-American honors.
In tomorrow's match, they will take on another upset-minded team in Guy Den Ouden/Adrian Oetzbach of Pepperdine, who knocked off Top-8 seeded Trent Bryde and Tyler Zink of Georgia on Tuesday evening.
All NCAA Quarterfinals match times have yet to be determined, and will be released following the conclusion of Tuesday's action.
