MINNESOTA CAPTURES 12 EVENT TITLES AT SNOWSHOE OPEN

JunThe University of Minnesota men's track and field team took first place in 12 events at the Snowshoe Open late Friday night at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse. No team scores were kept.

Junior Michael Stoick ran a personal-best 8:35.68 in the 3,000m run to take first place, while Scott Utne, who was running unattached took second place with a time of 8:42.71.

Also winning for the U of M were junior Fred Rodgers in the 60m dash with a time of 6.88, sophomore Steve Burkholder, who won the 200m dash with a time of 21.92, sophomore Tom Gerding, who won the 600m run with a time of 1:19.98 and sophomore Jason Owen, who captured top honors in the 800m run with a time of 1:51.31.

Senior Chad Johnson captured top honors in the mile run with a time of 4:13.82, while assistant coach Steve Plasencia, who was running unattached, took second with a time of 4:12.98. The Golden Gophers also took third through sixth place in the mile run.

Senior Benjamin Jensen grabbed top honors in the pole vault with a vault of 17-0 3/4 (5.20m), while Marc Johannsen took first in the high jump with a jump of 6-9 3/4 and sophomore Ben Meyer tied a Minnesota team record in the weight throw with a throw of 54-10 (16.71m).

The Golden Gophers will head to Madison, Wis. February 20-21 to compete in the Big Ten Indoor Championships. Minnesota will looking to defend the Big Ten Indoor title they won last year.
