GOLDEN GOPHERS FINISH THIRD AT BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

MADISON, WIS.- The Minnesota men's track and field team took third place at the 1999 Big Ten Championships in Madison, Wis. with 83 1/2 points. The Golden Gophers finished behind second-place Illinois and the 1999 Big Ten Champion Michigan State.
Senior Benjamin Jensen successfully defended his 1998 Big Ten heptathlon title by winning the 1999 title with 5, 622 points. Glenn Lindqvist took second in the heptathlon with 5, 582 points. Jensen also captured top honors in the pole vault with a NCAA provisional mark of 17-3 3/4 (5.28m).
Junior Staffan Strand also repeated as Big Ten champion when he took top honors in the high jump with an NCAA provisional qualifying jump of 7-1 3/4 (2.18m). This is the third consecutive season that Strand has earned the Big Ten high jump title.
Sophomore Steve Burkholder tied for fourth place with Iowa's Kurt Felix with a time of 6.82, a career-high mark in the 60m dash for Burkholder.
Junior Adam Freed took eighth place in the 400m dash with a time of 49.73.
Sophomore Tom Gerding took a fourth-place finish in the 600m run with a time of 1:19.31, a personal best time for him this season.
Freshman Andrew McKessock earned a sixth-place finish in the mile run when he ran a time of 4:17.76
Sophomore Ben Meyer took a fifth-place finish in the 35# weight throw with a throw of 57-0 3/4 (17.39m).
The next competition the Golden Gophers are slated for is the NCAA Qualifying Meet in Ames, Iowa on Feb. 27.
