MINNESOTA TRACK AND FIELD COMPETES AT IOWA TWILIGHT INVITATIONAL

TwThe Golden Gophers have seven athletes earn career-high marks

Freshman Andrew McKessock took first place in the 1,500m run Saturday at the Iowa Twilight Invitational with a time of 3:50.69. It was a career-high for him. Teammate Nate Clay took second with a career-high time of 3:52.27.

Sophomore Thomas Gerding took top honors in the 400m dash with a career-high time of 46.10. That time also provisionally qualifies him for the NCAA Championships.

Sophomore Jason Owen clocked a time of 1:49.58 to finish in third place in the 800m run, while teammates Ron Hoffner and Brian Meyer finished in ninth and 10th place and clocked times of 1:53.38 and 1:53.62, respectively. The time of 1:53.62 was a career-high time for Meyer.

Other athletes earning career highs were Robert Quade in the 400m hurdles, who took first place with a time of 52.63 and freshman Joey Corr, who took fourth place in the 5,000m run with a time of 14:54.34.

In the throws area, sophomore Mark Fahey threw the discus a career-high 177-1/2 feet (54.07m) to take third place, while teammates Adam Reed and Justin Asher took fourth and sixth places with throws of 176 (53.66m) and 169-1 (51.55m), respectively.

Sophomore Ben Meyer took third place in the hammer throw with a distance of 169-1 (51.76m).

The Golden Gophers will host the 1999 Maroon and Gold Open on Saturday, May 8, at the Bierman Track Stadium.
