MEN'S TENNIS PLAYERS HONORED AT ANNUAL BANQUET

The University of Minnesota men's tennis team celebrated the end of its season Thursday night with an annual awards banquet at the Edina Country Club in Edina, Minn. The Golden Gophers finished their season with a 4-1 loss to Washington in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Athens, Ga.

Senior Tom Chicoine, of Neenah, Wis., received the Len Bailey Award given to the player with the greatest grit and determination. Junior Martin Michlaowski was awarded the Unsung Player of the Year award. Michalowski carried the best overall record of any player this season, mostly at the No. 6 position.

Sophomore Tyson Parry of Chatham, Ontario, Canada, was awarded the Jerry Noyce Award, given to the most improved player. Parry moved into the No. 2 singles position this season as well as playing No. 1 singles on occasion. He was named All-Big Ten this year.

Big Ten Freshman of the Year honoree Thomas Haug of Zurich, Switzerland, was awarded the Team Spirit Award. Sophomore Jon Svensson received the Louis Ratner Award, given to the player who has made an outstanding contribution to Golden Gopher tennis.

Other awards were given out to the Baseline Club, the Minnesota men's tennis booster club. Roger Anderson recieved the Service Award while Vic Greenstein was honored with the Coaches Award. Jerry Gruggen received the Baseline Club President Award.
