MINNESOTA MEN'S SWIMMING HOLDS ONTO INVITATIONAL LEAD

WiscThe University of Minnesota men's swimming and diving team continues to hold onto the lead in the Minnesota Invitational after two days of competition. The Minnesota women remain in second behind Wisconsin.
A high point for the Minnesota men's team was the performance of the younger members of the squad. Freshmen Justin Mortimer and Ryan Plummer finished in third and fourth in the 400 IM, an event that has typically not been a strong on for Minnesota. Sophomore Jeff Hackler continued his domination of the 100 breaststroke, as he won the event with a time of 56.24. His Time was a NCAA "B" qualifying standard. Sophomore Matt Taylor also earned big points for the Gophers with his third place finish in the 200 freestyle.
The Golden Gopher men's upperclassmen also showed what makes them one of the top 25 teams in the country. Senior Dan Croaston won his second diving title of the invitational with a score of 403.25 in the 1-meter diving event. Junior Ben Bartell won the100 backstroke with a time of 49.38. Junior Chad Krastins was the runner up in the 100 butterfly with a time of 49.38. The men finished the night strong with a win in the 800 freestyle relay.
The women continued to perform well, although Wisconsin took two of the top three places in nearly every event. Katy Christoferson was the highest place winner, finishing third in the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.47. Tracy LaVoi also had a third place finish in the 3-meter diving competition with a score of 457.40. Sophomore Dana Baum picked up a fourth place finish in the 200 free with a time of 1:51.43. Senior Eliz Peirce finished fifth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.75. The Golden Gophers earned 58 points in the 100 backstroke. Emily Deppe, Ann Cahoy and Sara Rutkowski led the strong group of Minnesota backstrokers, finishing fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively.
Erin Stonebraker of Wisconsin broke her own Minnesota Invitational record in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:48.10. Peter Skoog of Iowa State set a new record in the 100 backstroke with his preliminary time of 48.78.
The Minnesota Invitational concludes tomorrow. Trials begin at 10 a.m., followed by diving at noon and finals at 3 p.m.
