SWIMMING AND DIVING TEAM GARNERS AWARDS AT BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

team,The University of Minnesota swimming and diving team had four individuals that won awards after placing second at the 2000 Big Ten Championships as well as landing 10 athletes on the All-Big Ten team, the most of any Big Ten school. The Golden Gophers placed second at the 2000 Big Ten Championships with 601 points, behind Michigan who scored 682 points.

Junior Alex Massura was named Big Ten Swimmer of the Year for his accomplishments during the meet as well as during the year. Massura captured two individual events, winning the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:44.20 and setting a pool record in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 47.62. He was also a member of four first-place relay teams (200-yard freestyle, 400-yard medley relay, 800-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay.)

Junior Dan Croaston received Big Ten Diver of the Year accolades as well as co-Diver of the Championships with Indiana's Tom Davidson. Croaston won the three-meter diving competition with a score of 631.40, his best ever on the three-meter and one point shy of former Golden Gopher P.J. Bogart's school record. Croaston placed second in the one-meter diving competition, scoring 562.95 points to finish behind Davidson's 574.05 points, who was also named co-Diver of the Championship with Croaston.

Freshman Jeff Hackler was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year. He won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:57.79 and placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 55.50.

In addition to the individual awards, 10 Golden Gophers were named to the All-Big Ten Team. Junior Keam Ang, junior Grant Butler, Croaston, sophomore Brandon Crook, freshman Ricardo Dornelas, who set a new Big Ten record in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 19.60, Hackler, Massura, freshman Allen Ong, freshman Matt Taylor and sophomore Max von Bodungen.

The Golden Gopher swimming and diving team will return to action on Sunday, March 5, when they compete in the Go-Pher-It Invitational. Minnesota will host the 2000 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center on March 23-25.
