Sophomore Andrew McKessock finished fourth in the first heat of the 1,500m run on Thursday with a time of 3:45.16. The only automatic qualifier for the Golden Gophers at the outdoor NCAA championships this year, McKessock will advance to the finals on Saturday. Junior Tom Gerding was not quite as successful. Despite running the 400m in just 45.89 - .03 seconds short of his school record - Gerding finished seventh in his heat.

McKessock is the only representative from Minnesota to advance to the finals. Senior Eric Pierce ran the 3,000m steeplechase in 8:52.33 on Wednesday, but also failed to qualify.
