HAUG AND MANKAD REACH QUARTERFINALS OF REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

qua University of Minnesota men's tennis players Harsh Mankad and Thomas Haug both advanced to the quarterfinals of the Region IV Championships in East Lansing, Mich. Haug is the tournament's defending champion, while Mankad is seeded third in the event.

Mankad defeated No. 22 Mike Westerhof of Ball State, 6-3, 6-2, in third-round play. He then defeated No. 12 Henry Beam of Michigan, 6-4, 6-2. He will face No. 13 Javier Taborga of Notre Dame on Sunday morning.

Haug got past Tom Harus of Northwestern in the third round, 6-3, 6-3, and defeated Matt Lockin of Michigan, 6-3, 6-3. He will meet No. 11 Brian Wilson of Illinois on Sunday morning.

In doubles play, the team of Manuel Lievano and Avery Ticer won their second round match over Recht and Smiley of Indiana, 9-8 (2). The duo nearly upset the tournament's second-seed, but fell 9-8 (3) to Kosta and Zeder of Illinois.

Haug and Rever Stephens advanced to the third round with an 8-2 win over Gaard and Waters of Iowa, but were eliminated by Louisville's Conley and Lien, 8-5.

The tournament runs through Monday.

Thomas Haug:

2nd round - def. Recht/Smiley, Indiana, 9-8 (2)
3rd round - lost to #2 Kosta/Zeder, Illinois, 8-9 (3)

Haug/Rever Stephens:
def. Gaard/Waters, Iowa, 8-2
lost to Conley/Lien, Louisville, 5-8
