GOPHER WOMEN'S GOLF ANNOUNCES RECRUITING CLASS

"I am very excited that Amy and Courtney have selected Minnesota," said Arthur. "They will make an immediate impact in our lineup. With their addition, we will be very good next year from players one to seven. They will provide us the depth to continue to improve this golf program on the national scene.
"Both players are ranked in the top 75 of the 2002 class and have a lot of national junior experience. This only helps them achieve success quicker on the college level.
"Amy and Courtney are both steals in my opinion. They are very good students and members of the National Honor Society, and by far, their best golf is in front of them."
Schmucker, a Cold Spring, Minn., native, is the defending Minnesota Class AA state champion. The Rocori High School senior and team captain has played in the state tournament in each year of her high school career, placing fifth in 1999 and 12th in 2000 before shooting rounds of 77 and 76 (153) to capture medalist honors last spring. The five- time All-Central Lakes Conference performer and two-time conference medalist won her first national tournament over the summer, winning the 2001 American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) COMPAQ Junior Classic. She placed eighth in the 2000- Minnesota Women's State Amateur Golf Championship and ninth in 2001.
"Amy was the best junior golfer in the state last year and from day one my number one priority was to get her carrying a Gopher golf bag for the next four years," added Arthur. "She is a long hitter who has a lot of game. The college game is a perfect fit for her and we are fortunate to have her signing with us."
Mahon, a native of Topeka, Kan., played in the Kansas State High School Tournament in each year of her high school career, improving her finish every time out. She placed third in the championship this fall, after placing fifth in 2000, seventh in 1999 and 10th in 1998. Mahon enjoyed a very successful summer competing on the national scene in 2001. She finished fourth at the UJGA Marsico Funds Junior Roundup, eighth at the AJGA Marsh Kansas City Junior and 14th at the AJGA Girls? Lucent Championship. Mahon's finish at the Lucent event qualified her for the AJGA Rolex Tournament of Champions in Tarpon Springs, Fla., last July. Mahon's brother, Charles Jr., plays collegiate golf at Missouri-Kansas City, while her father, Charles, is a teaching professional.
"Courtney is one of top high school players in the Midwest," says Arthur. "She has won a ton of junior tournaments in Kansas and this past summer gained a lot on experience on the national scene. She is a very dedicated player."
