Christoferson Scores, Sets School Record At NCAA Meet
Katy Christoferson finished 16th in the 200 individual medley at the first day of the 2001 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Nassau Aquatic Center. She earned the Gophers' lone point in the three-day meet. Christoferson qualified 14th in the morning trials in a time of 2:01.46 and finished 16th in the finals with a time of 2:03.33. Christoferson earned her second-ever top-16 national finish, giving her honorable mention All-America status. She is a three-time individual Big Ten champion and Minnesota's school-record holder in the 200 and 400 individual medley events.
Christoferson finished her collegiate career by placing 19th in the 400 individual medley (4:19:05) and 29th in the 100 butterfly (55.75). In a final time trial, she swam the 100 butterfly in 54.13, breaking the Minnesota school record of 54.24 set by Tanya Schuh in 1996. Christoferson will be Minnesota's lone competitor at the USA National meet, which begins March 27 in Austin, Texas.
Baum Improves Seeds In Two of Three Events At NCAA Meet
Dana Baum participated in three events in her first NCAA meet, finishing 19th in the 500 freestyle Thursday in a time of 4:48.52, 23rd in the 200 freestyle Friday in a time of 1:48.85, and 19th in the 1650 freestyle Saturday with a time of 16:35.07. She improved upon her seeds in the 500 freestyle (23rd) and 1650 freestyle (24th), and matched her seed in the 200 freestyle.
Baum has finished in the top eight in the Big Ten in all three distance freestyle events in both of her years at Minnesota. She is the school-record holder in the 200 freestyle (1:48.15), is second on the Minnesota all-time list in the 500 freestyle (4:47.87) with the school's fastest time in the event since 1997, and is fifth in the 1650 freestyle (16:33.29) with the Gophers' best time since 1996.

Jean Freeman is a four-time winner of the Big Ten Coach of the Year honor and the 1999 winner of the National Collegiate and Scholastic Swimming Trophy, the first female winner in the award's 41-year history. She was inducted into the Minnesota Women's Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 28, 2000. Freeman earned the 200th dual meet victory in her career Jan. 27 at Wisconsin against Purdue and Illinois, and now sports a career dual meet record of 200-53-4 (.786).
