MINNESOTA FINISHES NINTH AT 2001 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

FThe University of Minnesota men's swimming and diving team finished strong in the last day of finals to take ninth place at the 2001 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in College Station, Texas. Four Golden Gophers placed in the top eight to earn first-team All-America honors.
Freshman Justin Mortimer got the Golden Gophers going with a school record time of 14:47.82 in the 1650 freestyle to take fourth place, Minnesota's highest finish of the meet. Fellow freshman Martin Gustavsson also earned a fourth place finish in the 200 breast with a 1:56.58. Sophomore Jeff Hackler took sixth in the event at 1:56.66. Minnesota's final finalist was senior diver Dan Croaston took fifth on the platform, beating 1-meter champion Troy Dumais of Texas. Croaston moved to fifth after being in eighth place after his preliminary dives.
Minnesota also had three consolation finalists. Junior Ben Bartell finished 15th in the 200 back, junior Dov Malnik finished 16th in the 200 breast and senior Keam Ang also took 16th in the 200 fly.
The Golden Gophers finished ninth overall in the team standings with 176 points. Texas won the event for the second straight year.
Minnesota is finished with its season, but several athletes will compete in the USS Senior Nationals in Austin, Texas beginning Tuesday. The swimmers will be vying for spots on the U.S. teams for the World Championships and the World University Games.
