GOPHER MEN TAKE SECOND AND FIFTH IN LONG JUMP

higGolden Gopher sophomore Omar Clemmons took second today in the long jump at the 2001 Big Ten Track and Field Championships. Clemmons is Minnesota's highest finisher of the meet thus far. His leap of 24-7 3/4, a career-best, was bested only by the two-time Big Ten Outdoor champ, Len Herring of Wisconsin.
Junior Lyndon McDowell took fourth in the event with his new career-high of 23-4 1/2.
Minnesota had two athletes qualify for tomorrow's finals in the 1500m. Freshman Martin Robeck finished third in his heat with a career-best time of 3:49.32. Neil Hanson was right on Robeck's heels with his career-best of 3:29.39. Their times were also the third and fourth fastest in the prelims.
Sophomore Jayme Pantekoek was forced to withdraw from the decathlon after eight events.
At the time of this release, discus and high jump were in progress. Senior Mark Fahey and freshman Lynden Reder are competing in the discus. Senior Marc Johannsen, junior Lyndon McDowell and sophomore Scott Berggren are in the high jump.
After three events scoring, Minnesota is in fourth with 15 points.
