MCDOWELL IN FOURTH AFTER FIRST DAY OF NCAA DECATHLON

anUniversity of Minnesota junior Lyndon McDowell is in fourth place with 3895 points after five events in the decathlon at the 2001 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

McDowell opened the day with a time of 11.23 seconds in the 100m dash to score 810 points. He then scored 727 points in the long jump. The Port Elgin, Ontario, Canada native threw the shot put 42-5 1/2 feet to score 664 points. He placed second in the hihg jump with a leap of 6-9 to score 859 points. McDowell finished his day with a fourth place finish and a career-best time of 49.57 in the 400m.

McDowell will finish the decathlon tomorrow. In addition, senior Tom Gerding will run the 400m dash and the 4x400m relay will have their preliminary race.
