GOPHER MEN PERFORM WELL DESPITE WEATHER

ThIt was a wet and dreary night in Iowa City, but the University of Minnesota men's track and field team pulled off some bright performances at the Iowa Musco Twilight Invitational on Saturday night. The Golden Gopher finished in fourth place, but had three meet champions.

The 4x100m relay (Matt Taylor, Andy Wiberg, Ben Taylor, Tom Gerding) got the night off to a great start, easily winning the event with a time of 40.54. Gerding also took first in the 200m dash with a time of 21.28. Sophomore high jumper Scott Berggren was another Minnesota event winner. Berggren tied his career high with a leap of 6-8 3/4 to set a new meet record. Jayme Pantekoek was Minnesota's final event winner, taking first in the pole vault with a height of 14-6.

Other Minnesota standouts included Matt Taylor who was right on Gerding's heels in the 200m with a runner-up time of 21.48. Taylor also took second in the 100m, clocking a 10.78. Sophomore Omar Clemmons took second in the long jump bounding 23-1 3/4 into the sand.

The Golden Gopher throwers will compete at Northern Iowa on Sunday. The Minnesota men will host their first outdoor meet of the 2001 season on Saturday, May 12 beginning at 4:30 p.m.
