GUSTAVSSON SHATTERS SWEDISH NATIONAL RECORD IN 200 BREASTSTROKE

timMinnesota freshman swimmer Martin Gustavsson broke his own Swedish national record in the 200 breaststroke at the Swedish National Championships in Stockholm. His time of 2:14.41 is the ninth-best time recorded in the world this year. Gustavsson also won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.9. He will compete for Sweden at the World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan from July 16-29.
As a freshman at Minnesota, Gustavsson broke the Big Ten and school record en route to winning the 200 breaststroke at the 2001 Big Ten Championships and was a two-time All-American at the NCAA Championships.
Several other Golden Gopher swimmers will be competing in upcoming national competitions. Sophomore Todd Smolinski will compete for the U.S. in the 100 backstroke and the 400 medley relay at the World University Games in China this August. Freshman Diego Urreta will compete for Mexico at the World Championships in Japan while former Golden Gophers Alex Massura (Brazil), Keam Ang (Malaysia) and Dov Malnik (Israel) will also be competing for their respective countries.
