Virginia Commonwealth Upsets #15 Golden Gopher Men's Tennis Team

The 41st-ranked Virginia Commonwealth men's tennis team defeated 15th-ranked Minnesota, 6-1, this afternoon at Winston-Salem, N.C. The Golden Gophers played its fourth straight dual match without the second-ranked singles player in the nation, Harsh Mankad, due to injury.

VCU won all three doubles matches and five of six singles matches. Minnesota's lone win came at #1 singles, where Thomas Haug defeated Pedro Nieto 6-4, 7-6 (1). Florian Marquardt, ranked #46 in the nation in singles, defeated Minnesota's 78th-ranked Aleksey Zharinov 6-3, 6-4 at #2 singles.

At #1 doubles, the 20th-ranked team of Marquardt and Nieto defeated Haug and Boris Kuharic of Minnesota, 9-7.

Minnesota returns to action on March 3 at Columbus, Ohio, against the defending Big Ten Champions, Ohio State Buckeyes.
