Gopher Women Swimmers Finish Ninth at Big Tens

tiThe University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving team finished ninth with 226 points at the 2002 Big Ten Championships this week in Ann Arbor, Mich. Penn State University won the conference title with 594.5 points.

Junior Keri Hehn placed third in the 200-breaststroke with a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 2:13.82. The time is the second best time in school history behind only national champion Gretchen Hegener.

Newcomer Rebecca Cornthwaite finished second in the platform diving competition with a NCAA Zone qualifying score of 391.60 points.

Junior Dana Baum wrapped-up a great Big Ten weekend with tenth place in the 1650-yard freestyle, swimming a season-best time of 16:41.72. Baum also swam in the 400-yard freestyle relay with teammates Katy Coombe, Megan Moore and Anne Koller to place eighth with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3:25.56.

Baum completed the four-day Big Ten Championships by recording one second, one third, one fifth, three eighths and one tenth place finishes for a total of 62.5 points.

Minnesota next competes at the Gopher-It Invite on Sunday, March 3 at the University Aquatic Center.
