Medical Statement Regarding Death Of Penn State Track Athlete

AccPenn State sophomore track and field athlete Kevin Dare died this afternoon at the Big Ten Track and Field Championships after sustaining fatal head injuries during the pole vault competition.

According to University of Minnesota Medical Director, Dr. Elizabeth Arendt, "He suffered secondary to severe head and neck injuries. We tried to revive him by instituting respiratory aid and began CPR on site. We continued to perform CPR in the ambulance before he was pronounced dead at Hennepin County Medical Center."

The Championships will continue tomorrow at University Field House. A special ceremony to honor Dare will be held at noon. The high jump competition will be moved from noon to 12:50 to accommodate the ceremony.
