Gopher Men's Tennis Defeats Northwestern 7-0

handThe Golden Gopher men's tennis team swept the Northwestern Wildcats Friday evening in Bloomington, Minn. With top ranked player Harsh Mankad on hand, the Maroon and Gold were able sweep the doubles point and earn straight set victories in all but one singles match.

In doubles competition, Mankad and Thomas Haug were able to defeat Thomas Hanus and Russell Bennett 8-5 in the No.1 spot, while Reven Stephens and Manuel Lievano secured the doubles point with an 8-4 victory in the No. 2 spot. The No. 3 spot earned the Golden Gophers a doubles sweep with Aleksey Zharinov and Avery Ticer winning 8-6 over Josh Axler and Ryan Edlefsen.

The Maroon and Gold were also able to sweep the singles competition allowing Northwestern a victory in only one set. Mankad was able to fight off the Wildcats' Thomas Hanus to win the No. 1 spot 7-6 (3), 6- 1. Haug, Zharinov, Chris Wettengel and Ticer were also able to earn straight set victories in the No. 2, 3, 5 and 6 spots. Manuel Lievano defeated Joost Hol in a three set battle 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-2 to win the No. 4 singles match.

The Gophers face No. 2 Illinois on Saturday April 13, at 6:30pm a the 98th Street Racquet Club in Bloomington, Minn.
