Gopher Men Claim Three LSU Invitational Titles

Senior co-captain Bob Quade won the 400-meter hurdles in 51.32, while freshman high jumper Kevin Netzer cleared 6-10 3/4 to take top honors. Karl Erickson won the shot put for the Gophers with a throw of 56-6 1/2 and placed seventh in the discus (159-0). Teammate Mike Ehlers finished second in the shot with an effort of 54-11 1/4.
Minnesota's Lynden Reder< /a> continued his impressive season with a second place showing in the hammer (193-02), while teammate Curt Schoenfelder placed third (173-11).
A pair of Gophers scored in the 400-meter dash, as Adam Steele (46.62) placed fourth and Andy Wohlin (47.80) finished seventh. 2002 NCAA Indoor National Champion Alleyne Francique of LSU won in a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 44.87.
Junior Matt Taylor placed sixth in the 100-meter dash (10.75), after running a 10.68 in preliminaries. Fred Day of Houston won the event in 10.47. Taylor also placed sixth in the 200-meter dash (21.56), behind LSU's Robert Parham who clocked a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 20.45. Taylor did run a 21.41 in preliminaries.
In the horizontal jumps, Minnesota's Omar Clemmons (24-2 1/4) placed fifth in the long jump, while Thomas Flensborg-Madsen (50-0 1/2) finished fourth in the triple jump. Jason Swenson threw the javelin 195-6 for a third place finish.
Minnesota also ran at the Carleton Relays in Northfield, Minn., taking four titles. Five-time All-American Mitch Potter won the 200-meter dash in 21.44, while Joronne Williamson won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.81. Minnesota's Vince Donahoe won the 400-meter dash in 54.99, while Chris Dixon won the long jump (22-10).
The Gopher will next be in action when they travel to Des Moines, Iowa next weekend for the running of the Drake Relays.
