Gopher Men Perform Well at Texas Relays

NebrAustin, Texas - Karl Erickson continued his impressive freshman season for Minnesota placing third throwing the discus 172-7 at the Texas Relays. Nebraska's John Shovlain won the discus with a heave of 174-2, while Erickson also placed ninth in the shot put with a throw of 53-7 3/4.

The Gophers' Lynden Reder also had a fine showing, placing eighth among a superb hammer throw field. Reder set the school record with an effort of 194-9. SMU's Libor Charfreitag won the competition with a NCAA automatic throw of 244-0.

Minnesota decathletes Lyndon McDowell and Jesse Madsen failed to finish the competition due to injury.

The Golden Gophers will next be in action Saturday at the Hamline Invitational in St. Paul, Minn.
