Gopher Men Open Big Ten Conference Championships

PurdMadison, Wis. - After the first day of competition of the Big Ten Track & Field Championships, the Minnesota Golden Gophers are tied for third place with 13 points. Iowa also has 13 points, while Purdue leads the meet with 18. Ohio State is in second place with 14 points after the first day's two events.

Minnesota's Will McComb ran a 29:48.89 in the 10,000 meters to place second. The sophomore from Port Elgin, Ontario placed behind senior Donovan Fellows of Purdue (29:41.22).

Lynden Reder earned a fourth-place finish in the hammer throw for Minnesota with a toss of 196-4. Iowa's Jim Costello won the event with a NCAA provisional qualifying throw of 217-7.

The championships will continue at 9:30 Saturday morning with the 110-meter high hurdles of the decathlon. After five events, three Gophers are in the top six. Senior Lyndon McDowell is in second with 4,014, 72 points behind Michigan State's Paul Terek. Jesse Madsen and Travis Brandstatter stand in third and sixth, respectively, for Minnesota.
